Excellent Resource

I have used this text in a literature class focused on writing about and in the wake of the 14th century plague. While there are other collections of primary sources on plague, the aspects of Horrox's work that make her edition superior are: 1) her breakdown of "narrative accounts" by geography, distinguishing between accounts from continental Europe and the British Isles--very useful in reminding students of differences among medieval cultures, and; 2) her own excellent introductions to each of the main sections ("Narrative Accounts," "Explanations and Responses," and "Consequences"). Horrox is a fine writer who imparts a lot of information with clarity and grace. Her engaging prose style helpfully explains the context of these writings and stimulates one's further interest.

Probably not for the first time reader about the Black Death

This is not for the casually interested reader, as it is comprised of primary source material. First time readers on the subject would be better off reading another book, such as Barbara Tuchman's great tome, "A Distant Mirror: the Calamitous Fourteenth Century." But any who are fascinated by the Great Mortality, as it was called contemporaneously, will find this a useful addition to their reading.

An outstanding collection of contemporary accounts

Horrox has collected and translated dozens of first-hand accounts of the Black Death of 1348 - 1350. The first quarter of the book is comprised of narrative accounts of the arrival and devastation of the plague, from its arrival in Italy to its spread into Britain. The middle half shows the various responses (medical, religious and scientific) to the mortality, the final quarter of the book examining its reprocussions.

All of the accounts presented here are from eye-witnessess to the terrible virulence and mortality of the Black Death. Although the majority of the documents are from Britain, there is a tremendous amount of similarity among them - the fear, shock, sadness and sense of fatalism as the disease ravaged Europe and the panic and social and economic dislocation that resulted. As a historian, I was fascinated; lay readers will almost certainly be similarly riveted by these accounts and the eerily familiar tone of the voices.

This book in it's fourth edition is better suited as a historical look at architectural drawings. It is strongly lacking in CAD production standards; some of the other standards and terminologies mentioned are outdated and do not reflect a concensus of how we professionals practice; a lot of the graphics used are poor quality and are difficult to read.

Not that good, alas!

Petr Kopl's adaptation of "A Scandal in Bohemia" was the freshest as well as the most iconoclastic interpretation of the immortal work penned by Sir ACD. Unfortunately, such words can't be written about this work. In many senses it remains true to the original, and there it falls short of the graphic novel version created by Ian Edginton. It also tries to incorporate cross-references to other classic works, but this time they appear somewhat superfluous. Nevertheless, HOUND is something that can be read in any form, anytime. Too bad that Kopl had set his standards so highly in his first work made available in English.

The Hound of the Baskervilles is Petr Kopl's second Sherlock Holmes adaption.

Sherlock Holmes fans will already be familiar with the story of the Hound and quite a few adaptions but what makes Petr's work stand out are the little bits and pieces you see here and there. For example there is a scene from the Solitary cyclist when Sherlock talks about how he followed Milverton for the day his tobacco smoke looks like a skull. on the wall are pictures from A Study in Scarlet and The Dancing Men. You even get guest appearances from Mary Poppins appearing on the roof as well as Jonathan Harker {from Dracula} Dr Jekyll who the hotel reception says "if only every guest was like you" while looking his nose down at Holmes and Watson.

Petr's artwork is perfect for the gothic story. Wonderfully drawn illustrations which

There's also a letter from Sherlock Holmes at the end breaking down each chapter and all the little quirks inside them.

Other things I love are quotes like these.

A Different Hound of the Baskervilles

Over the years, I’ve collected literally thousands of volumes related to Sherlock Holmes. Mostly I try to find pastiches, providing additional adventures about Our Heroes, Holmes and Dr. Watson, to augment the pitifully few 60 original stories in The Canon. However, my collection isn’t all pastiches – there are a number of editions of The Canon, as well as countless books of commentary and analysis. As part of that collection, I’ve obtained a number of graphic novels and comics related to the Great Detective, some with original stories, and some adapting the originals. I was very happy to find these very handsome volumes of three of the Canonical tales, as written and drawn by Petr Kopl.

The first thing that should be mentioned is that Kopl did not limit himself to the actual Canon, in that he adds twists, subplots, and outright changes – some very big changes indeed! Although I’m not entirely happy with this – I’m a purist, after all – I understand what his purpose was. When I re-read these Canonical adventures next time, it won’t be from Mr. Kopl’s works, I can step outside of my purism and enjoy them for the little masterpieces that they are.

In Kopl’s adaptation of “The Hound of the Baskervilles”, his artwork is very evocative of the different moods of the story, from safe moments inside, rendered in plain browns, to jagged blues and greens and other dark shadows when on the Moor, facing the threat of the Hound. And at the end, he provides an unexpected Epilogue that might change everything.

Although I disagree with Kopl’s handling of the Canonical stories, I can’t help but admire all the effort and talent that went into producing these handsome volumes. I understand that he has also produced a similar version of Doyle’s “The Lost World”, which I’m sure will please fans of Professor Challenger. I know that I’m curious to see what he does next in the World of Holmes.

this a thorough manual for all flight simulator enthusiasts, price is a little steep, but well woth it for all software 737s such as pmdg,pilot in command ect...i rec this book to anyone who flies a simulator and wishews for the most realistic enjoyment.

Airfix has been at the forefront of the model industry since 1955 when the first Airfix aircraft kit appeared in UK branches of Woolworth's. The kits were made to a constant scale and covered a wide variety of subjects, from aircraft to birds and from tanks to dinosaurs. In 1981 the famous London-based company closed down and only the kits survived intact. For the next twenty-five years Airfix was run by Palitoy and later Humbrol, but suffered from a lack of investment. In 2006, Hornby Hobbies Ltd, the train and Scalextric manufacturer, bought the ailing company and transformed it. Money and resources were ploughed into the range, and today Airfix releases around twenty new kits per year, designed to an incredibly high standard. The old kits of the 1950s and 1960s are gradually being replaced by new state-of-the-art tooling, all bearing that most prestigious name - Airfix. Published to coincide with the sixtieth anniversary of the first Airfix aircraft kit, Sixty Years of Airfix Models, tells the full story, year by year, of the company and its products.

About the Author

Jeremy Brook was born in 1950 and made his first Airfix kit about eight years later. Passionate about Airfix, he lives in Wiltshire where he now runs the Airfix Collectors' Club and produces the Club's journal, Constant Scale. Details of the club can be found at www.airfixcollectorsclub.co.uk. He is also Honorary Archivist for Airfix at Hornby Hobbies Ltd.

Just received this morning and spent the last couple of hours with the book. Very good look into the history and complexities of running one of the iconic pioneers of plastic model kits as it went through various troubles and tribulations in ownership. The illustrations will warm the heart of anyone who made these kits as a child while the writing is in depth and covers as much details as you will likely every want to know about Airfix.

Probably The Best Airfix Book Yet...

A few books have started to emerge recently describing the history of the Airfix model kit company, its products and how the company evolved over the past 60 years. These books also look at the range of kits Airfix produced and their various types boxings and packaging styles. For some years Airfix was possibly the most prolific producer of model kits ranging from aircraft to figure kits, toy soldiers to military vehicles and space ships, rockets and various other kits like some of the James Bond special cars and autogyros.

This book has been released to coincide with Airfix's 60th year, producing model kits and the research and resource information contained within is absolutely first class; beginning with a brief overview of the company and its transition through various 'parent' companies, the author then covers each year of Airfix's model releases, what kits were released, some discussion on the more prominent releases and as the years progress, what kits were withdrawn, re-released and modified. The author has an absolutely first class knowledge of Airfix and their products and his passion for the model range and nostalgic notes regarding some of the notable releases over the years are astounding. I have read a few books about Airfix and its history and kits but this book chronologically examines every model ever released by Airfix, when it first was released, when with drawn and when the kit was reintroduced into the range; what notable additions were made to that kit and changes to decals, painting schemes and so forth.

In summary an extremely well written and detailed book about Airfix, its product range, some of the notable people who made the company, some of the renowned artists who painted up box cover artwork, the various types of packaging and just about everything else in between about Airfix model kits. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend it to anyone who has an interest in this model kit company and its vast range of model subjects. Well done, Jeremy Brook!

Highly recommended for fans of Airfix plastic kits

Excellent book for Airfix kit enthusiasts. I built my first Airfix kits in the mid 1950s, including the 1912 Rolls Royce, a Spitfire, and a sailing ship (which I cannot recall exactly now). The book has an excellent review of the kits, the history and details of their introduction, and information on the people involved.

I personally love this book

I'm not sure why the bad review, this book is NOT for the beginner and I do think it was very thorough and many of the techniques are extremely helpful. If you are just beginning, this might not be the right book for you, but if you are expanding your knowledge, this is a great book to add to any sewer's library. I'm very pleased!

Never judge a book by its cover!

I forgot the old adage and was seduced by the dazzling photo on the cover, but that was where my joy ended. To put it simply this book was very DISAPPOINTING!
My first problem was that after the author went into a lengthy diatribe about the importance of a well made primary block, (which all her secondary blocks are made from), she gave no instructions on how to make one.
The book continues along this vein of vagueness and half-explanations, which means one would need to have enough previous pattern-cutting experience in order to fill in the blanks. Therefore I would say this book is definetly NOT for beginners because most will be very confused.
I dont think the book will be very usefull to the advanced pattern cutter either because the styles she explains are very basic and you would probably have come across them in other patterncutting books where they were not being touted as "eveningwear".
The book also mentions draping in its title, which I find laughable as it covers draping on a total of THREE pages and with the exception of a cowl-neck top, I dont think ruching bits of fabric across the shoulders really qualifies as draping.
Suffice to say I do not recommend this book to ANYONE, as I found it totally useless, and I only gave it one star for the pretty picture on the cover which I shall frame to remind me CAVEAT EMPTOR!

How to Draft a Strapless Bodice Sloper for Evening Wear!

This book is not for beginners in dress drafting. But even though I'm a novice, I did find the information informative... drafting dressy clothes requires starting with a different sloper rather than the slopers used in the drafting of regular daytime garments. The books on this subject are hard to find and limited, so this book would still be helpful for someone seeking information on drafting evening garments. I believe it is meant to be a supplement to further study. I would say that it would help someone who already is intermediate or advanced in drafting to start exploring drafting evening garments. I did enjoy this book very much!
