A very interesting read. Blames a lot of the world's problems on those pesky humans. Very anti-family written. After reading this book it made me value my family even more than I already do. Based off of the viewpoint in this book, I can see why children are not valued as they should be.

Leslie Feinberg has been a leader in the transgender rights movement as long as such a movement has existed. This book is both deeply personal and widely researched. Feinberg examines perceptions of the body, the status of clothing, and the structures of societies that welcome or are threatened by gender variance. The portrait gallery that closes the book contains photographs and capsule biographies of contemporary transgendered people.

Feinberg, a surgically and hormonally transgendered female-to-male and the author of the novel Stone Butch Blues, here effectively pummels several old saws about gender, such as that there were two or three centuries in ancient Greece that constituted the golden age of gayness ("How happy were the gay slaves?" she asks). She also shows the often frantic and neurotic ways Western society clings to rigid notions of gender, while at the same time she describes (though not fully enough) how these notions shift radically from age to age. But her historical perspective can be sketchy. Feinberg, for example, expends little effort in looking into why a notorious band of male Welsh revolutionaries calling themselves Rebecca and Her Daughters dressed as women to destroy tollbooths in the mid-19th century. Though she draws many conclusions from this and other examples of cross-dressing rebellion through the ages, she fails to consider that the readiest disguise for a married man is his wife's clothing. The book does offer an enlightening album of singular people: a female transvestite who is sexually attracted to gay men; a couple consisting of a female cross-dresser and a male-cross-dresser. But Feinberg ultimately leaves too many gaps, both in history and in reasoning, to make her theories about gender expression and gender oppression solid. Author tour. Activist Feinberg (Stone Butch Blues, Firebrand, 1993) here presents a sweeping history that many others have glossed over or denied: she traces transgender lives, identities, and expression from communal societies to the present day. Furthermore, she provides theoretical insight while always remaining accessible to the general reader. Feinberg argues that the current devaluation and oppression of trans peoples is inextricably linked to the emergence of hierarchical class-based societal forms and to shifts from matrilineal to patriarchal social organization. Her book really comes alive, however, through her infusion of personal narrative into the historical material?the book ultimately is Feinberg's personal journey to find some representative place in a history that usually has denied or denigrated trans existence. Illustrated throughout, her book is finally a "portrait gallery" of photographs accompanied by statements from and biographies of people representing parts of the transgender spectrum. Appendixes include lists of organizations and publications. One of my favorite books to recommend people who are curious about trans lives and history. It's an accessible read, easy to get through, yet packed with such thorough research.

A Layperson's View of History

History is not only for historians but if one is not a historian one's understanding of events and individuals within their context will be limited. Even then, few historians are capable of mastering the entirety of human history. It is clear that Feinberg has done a lot of reading but it is also clear that her readings has been filtered through two lens.

The first is Marxism. Given her working class background and where/when Feinberg grew up and lived prior to this book, it makes perfect sense this would be one of the lens she views history through. Marxism is still a valid if debated theory of historical interpretation but it is rarely sufficient to explain everything.

Feinberg's second lens is her own natural desire to find others like herself, others who do not neatly fit into the social defined gender categories. While this desire is natural it should never be can excuse to misinterpret evidence or to view other cultures with your own biases. But let's be honest, many well-trained historians do this.

Therefore I cannot fault a layperson too much for historical interpretations I may have issue with but instead I should look at where such information is gleaned. The fact is that the vast majority of Feinberg's statements are drawn from published students by scholars and wouldbe scholars.

What I like about this book is that she attempts to pull together a wide range of information and couple it with the political, social, and economic struggles of transgendered people today. The stories are powerful and pulled from a variety of times and places though I noticed a very large amount of Native American information.

This book came out 12 years ago so I would urge Feinberg to reflect on this and revise it to include more evidence and interpretations as well as an update on civil rights for those who cannot or refuse to live nicely in a gender box.

Trans* people have a history too...

I'm a 20-year-old female-to-male transsexual. Five years ago, I didn't even know other people like me existed. Now, thanks to this book, I know people like me have been around as long as human beings from the more ordinary walks of life.
You might think that being transsexual, I'd be pretty open-minded, but I must confess that this book really got me thinking about my own chosen gender and what exactly I want do with my transsexuality. Do I want to blend in with all the genetic XY guys after all, leaving no trace of my 'abnormal' gender? Do I really care if people know I don't have a penis? Must I be 100% male 100% of the time? And what is 'male' anyway?
Leslie presents a very personal history of transgenderism. Hir short autobiography echoes that of the many people who don't fit into the male OR female ONLY roles society has pushed us into over the centuries. Being transgendered, I could really emphasise with hir life story, and that of all the other trans* people who have a part in this book.
I'd recommend this book not only to other trans* people, but anyone who is interested in something else other than the traditional gender roles we are given. This is such a different prism to look at history and gender through. I want to major in History now. ::grin::

Far Too Negative on Nuclear Power which emits no CO2

The author covered very negative subjects on the one energy source that could displace the Big Gorilla - fossil fuel, and that is nuclear power. I know the fossil fuel industry through people like the Koch brothers pay scientists and writers to put out negative information about nuclear power to insure they will never take over from fossil fuel, even though they are clean, smoke and soot-free and do not emit CO2. It would be good to hear the author come clean about whether his negatives views of nuclear were inspired by fossil fuel money.

Just Okay... Book has many grammatical errors and does lots of content repeating. It reads as if the author did lots of Wikipedia research then summarized. If you know nothing about the electrical industry, you may glean some understanding, yet there are several other books that will instill concepts and understanding. Save your money on this one...

A Dilly in Delhi

Our hero is a politician and father of thirteen - all still at home. I don't know which is scarier: a politician raising his own voter base; or raising thirteen kids. Thankfully, the terror stops there.

The fun, however, starts on page one and continues throughout the book. We have family follies and political pandemonium; coming-of-age and first-love; and lots of children.

I felt as if Mahajan was sitting next to me telling me the story; the writing was that real and 'friendly'. I am amazed that this is a first book. This being the P.S. edition, we also get the additional material from him in the back of the book.

Grab this one if you want to have fun and enjoy a satiric look at part of the life of India.

I laughed, I cried, I identified!

As the adult program planner for a large suburban library in the NY metropolitan area, responsbile for booking author appearances, a huge number of books cross my desk. It would be impossible to read them all so I choose pages at random, trying to avoid being influenced by the publisher's hype. Karan Mahajan's "Family Planning" grabbed me right from the beginning...not his beginning but mine, which just happened to be page 137. A few pages later I went to page 1 and didn't stop until the end. He is visiting the Port Washington Public Library on Tuesday, August 11 @ 7:30 - I can't wait! If you're in the neighborhood, drop by.

Fourteen kids!

Rakesh Ahuja has thirteen children (with one on the way) and a wife whom he is attracted to only when she is pregnant. He is the Minister of Urban Development in the Indian government, but his personal and political clashes are taking their toll. In particular, he's dealing with his immature and moody oldest son, Arjun, and a political coup started by the (on-screen) death of the country's most famous soap star.

I have to say that I just didn't "get" this book. Many of the other reviews characterize it as amusing or farcical. I failed to see the comedy in most of it. I didn't understand many of the cultural references, which was largely my lack, but it was still frustrating. The writing was fine, but I was often confused. I think, in large part, due to some of the bilingual references and misspellings. Still, there were some pretty good, memorable lines throughout. Here's my favorite:

"He was squeezing his butt to hold in the piss. It appeared, strangely, to work."

A little crude, but funny. Though I struggled with this book, I must caution that it may have just been me. I may have completely missed the boat or the point. I might have some mental block that is no fault of the author. Many critics really enjoyed this book. Even for me, towards the end, something kind of reminded me of Cat's Cradle, by Kurt Vonnegut. Mr. Mahajan can take comfort in the fact that I don't really "get" Mr. Vonnegut either. If you "get" that kind of thing, this may be the book for you.

excellent book!!

I was very excited when I received this book. I was delivered in a timely manner I was not expecting it to come soon. The pictures are very vivid and labeled accurately. This is a perfect book if you want to have a good command of the anatomy and is very relevant for practicing technologist. My only suggestion is that should be available in electronic form which would make it easy to carry around and convenient reference. I highly recommend this book.

Great Book, Free Shipping but it took forever to get here.

The book is great, BUT..... Ordered it July 10th and it did not ship until July 28th. It was free shipping and was stated to be delivered between July 17th and Aug 1st. I am just glad I didn't need this book I just wanted it. If it would have been for a class that is a different story, I might suggest looking around for faster service.

Jackson is the head coach of the NBA's Chicago Bulls. The team won three successive championships with Jackson in charge. A fellow named Michael Jordan was on those teams, so there are those who dismiss Jackson's coaching ability in favor of an "anybody could win with Michael" theory. They're wrong. Jackson is an excellent tactician and a shrewd motivator who contributes greatly to the Bulls' success. Here he puts forth his coaching philosophies, an eclectic mix of hoop sense, Zen, Native American wisdom, and Western philosophy. His earliest challenge was to maximize Jordan's skills by convincing him to believe in his teammates' abilities. He met it with an assist from the philosophy of a Middle Eastern guru. Jackson has always had a reputation for being a little off center, and this book will provide fuel for his critics. His genius isn't for devising strategy but for inducing wealthy, pampered, often petulant young men to pull together spiritually to attain a common goal. Whole School Read

This is a fabulous book. Our school is basketball crazy the way Texas schools adhere to football. We chose it for a "whole school read" and have kids reading willingly who would never have tackled a book except under dire duress. We have discussions about leadership, community, "we or me." There are quote walls in several rooms as kids are picking out inspirational sentences. The religious aspects, while pervasive, are such that students seem to be able to take what they want and leave the rest. Only a few have expressed discomfort with the spiritual talk in the book - and those are largely kids who are struggling with those very questions themselves. While I had geared myself for objections about the religious content, I had not expected language to be an issue. Be aware that there are a few (very few) "F-Bombs" in the book. This marks the difference between whether an adult is reading it or someone actively looking for "school appropriate language." Many of us had not noticed this language and many of the students had not noticed; we are that inured to profane language. But we can't require students to read a book that contains language they would be bounced for using in the halls. This is where "Sacred Hoops" lost that final star.

Great insight to a great coach and team

I have read this book twice since buying it a short time ago. It's quite readable and entertaining, not to say insightful.

This is a book written in Phil's voice and reads something like a diary he would have kept. It gives some good biographical information on Phil, his years in school, as a player for the NY Knicks, as a beginning coach and how he came to combine his spiritual searches with basketball playing and coaching. Most of the examples given and stories told pertain to Phils years as head coach of the Chicago Bulls. There are a number of references to books on Zen and Indian spirituality that have influenced his thinking

The only critique I would have is that the book's sense of time is rather fragmented and does not progress in a strictly linear fashion. There are references to events that occurred earlier and those to come later. So, I had to construct my own timeline to track the strict evolution of events--a minor chore--but it would have been helpful if the book had supplied this.

Sacred books

Is this book a slam-dunk? It could be. I'm having a hard time rating this book 4 stars when it should have had 4.5 stars. This book could be rated more like Scottie Pippen than Michael Jordan to keep up with this book's terms.

The story about Phil Jackson and the Chicago Bulls is amazing. Any story written about it has the potential to reach Jordan heights. The story described by Phil Jackson makes it even more compelling.

Getting to know the insights about Jackson's training also gives insight about the man and his beliefs as Zen is unmistakenly connected to him. This is the only flaw within the book. Although he used it on his pupils and it worked on them, it does not always guarantee succes outside sports. Business is a different league.

If you're a sports lover just grab a copy of the book and read it. If you like to step up your own game DO try this at home, although success cannot be guaranteed.
