The Blackfeet were the strongest military power on the northwestern plains in the historic buffalo days. For half a century up to 1805, they were almost constantly at war with the Shoshonis and came very close to exterminating that tribe. They aggressively asserted themselves against the Flatheads and the Kutenais, shoving them westward across the Rockies. They got on fairly well with English and Canadian traders during the heyday of the fur trade on the Saskatchewan River, but on the upper Missouri they took an early dislike to Americans, whom they called "Big Knives." American fur traders, such as Manuel Lisa, Pierre Menard, and Andrew Henry, were literally chased out of Montana by the Blackfeet.

About the Author
John C. Ewers (1909–1997), was the first curator of the Museum of the Plains Indian on the Blackfeet Reservation in Montana. Later he served as Director of what is now Smithsonian Institution's National Museum  of American History and was Ethnologost Emeritus with the Smithsonian.  His many publications include The Blackfeet: Raiders on the Northwestern Plains and Plains Indian History and Culture: Essays on Continuity and Change.

thoroughly documented research

This book is a researcher's dream, and a pleasure to read. First published in 1958, this volume traces the history of the Blackfeet from pre-horse days through to the 1950's. The author displays a thorough understanding of his subject, and extensively annotates his work, paying meticulous attention to dates, places and names. John C Ewers was the first curator of the Museum of the Plains Indian near Browning, Montana, and many of the items in the museum collection were given to him at the time by elder members of the tribe at the time. He used primary sources for much of his information for this book, and corroborated details with these tribal elders as much as possible. This is a well-written, respectful history of the Blackfeet nation, and ought to remain in print for decades to come. Potential buyers should scan the Table of Contents page for an overview of subjects covered.

A good, reasonably thorough, traditional ethnography

This is a good, old-style ethnography of the Blackfoot. It provides a reasonably thorough account of material culture. It's weaker on traditional human culture, especially religious beliefs, but it does a decent job on the outward manifestations of interior beliefs.

As you would expect from this kind of ethnography, the book is descriptive, not explanatory. With very few exceptions, it also fails to make any comparisons with other cultures, and any comparisons concern only the tribe's near neighbors such as the Crow or Flatheads.

Because he did his work in the 1940s and 1950s, Ewers' respondents include elderly members of the tribe who recall customs of their pre-reservation youth. Along with the accounts of white explorers and traders, these provide Ewers' main sources for the history of the Blackfoot.

The parts that stick with me the most are the participants' views of horse raiding expeditions, and the views of "medicine" rituals and objects. Both of these are easily distorted by outsiders, and Ewers seems to get them right.

It's interesting to see the tension in this older ethnographic perspective. He's sympathetic to the tribe, he recognizes the inhumanity inflicted on them, and yet he also praises "good" Indian agents who try to help the Blackfoot learn to farm and ranch. He even has some good things to say about Indian boarding schools!

Simplifying a bit, Ewers tends to see the political and economic injustices inflicted on the Blackfoot but he cannot see the cultural injustices. The tension is evident even in the title, which refers to the "Blackfeet," even though he notes in the text that this plural is not used n the Blackfoot language and many Blackfoot insist on the singular usage that I have used in this review. Some are even offended by the term. It's not clear that Ewars would understand why this matters.

Best Book on The Blackfeet History I have ever...

This is probably the most authentic account of the Blackfeet I have ever come across. It has the "Civilization of the American Indian Series" endorsement, which I trust as being the seal of authenticity when it comes to Native American Histories.

I wanted to like it

The first thirds book was excellent, dark and gripping. The third and fourth books aren't up to par. Especially "Rise and Fall". There was so much drama going on that I almost didn't finish the book. Like Austen said, "Everyone's sleeping with everyone." And that became the whole theme of the book while the main plot of capturing Hogan just became the side show. I really had high hopes for the series but it just became another cliche fangirl m/m fiction - with everyone having "issues" and they have to release it in emotional monologues, rambling about their feelings for each other. I mean come on. The same thing happened to the Cut and Run series.

I want the author to go beyond the idea of Therians and the Thirds. I wanted to her to dig deeper to the main plot and not be afraid of her characters. I wanted it to be a plot driven story rather than character driven.

I really like the premise and the promise of the series. I just wish the first book's brilliance could have been sustained.

Fantastic book, excellent continuation of the THIRDS series

Fantastic book, excellent continuation of the THIRDS series. I read this nonstop from cover to cover. Loved the storyline, characterizations, suspense and humor. I love Dex and Sloane. This book was different as Sloane was recovering from a serious injury, so the guys weren't partnered on the job. Dex and Sloane were still featured throughout the book, but in a different context. It was fascinating to see new or hidden aspects of their personalities and how they came through. Enjoyed seeing a little bit of the darker side of Dex, obsessed with finding and arresting Beck Hogan. Glad to see Sloane opening up and truly realizing what Dex means to him. Love that the characters are still growing and fresh.

With Sloane injured, we got to see more of the team particularly Ash as well as Sebastian. Loved learning more about the other members and seeing them all pull together as a team even with their leader injured. We see more of Ash in Rise & Fall and lots of Ash-Dex interactions. Happy to see Ash fleshed out more yet not losing his gruff and grouchy personality. After seeing more of Ash/Cael, Calvin/Hobbs and Sebastian, I'm looking forward to books concentrating on them.

Lots of action, suspense and character moments, this book ended all too soon. I've re-read the entire THIRDS series, it never gets old. Enjoyable characters, action, adventures and a lot of love underneath even if certain characters are too stubborn to admit it. Excellent book. I'm ready for the next one.

Story Review:

I must say I was so glad Rise & Fall picked up right where Rack & Ruin ended! Those were some traumatic times. It set our story up to see our heroes grow and change while getting the bad guy.

Unfortunately, Dex and Sloane are apart for quite a lot of the book. Dex having decided to protect his family no matter the cost leaves Sloane recuperating at home. Lies are made and relationships are worn thin. However from this comes determination and finding out what means the most to them.

We see more of the other couples’ relationships, which is nice. Ash and Cael as well as Calvin and Hobbs move to address their issues.

There is lots of action and adventure. Although Dex is a little tstl at times, he is still his crazy fun self and I liked the music references throughout the book. We see a sweeter, sappier side of Sloane and I really liked the time they do spend together.

The story set up over the last three books came to a close, but I look forward to whatever else awaits the Destructive Delta team in future books.

Narration Review:

I really like this narrator, he has different voices for the characters and he is easy to listen to. I like that they do effects for talking on the phone or over headsets, it lends more depth to the production.

and this freebie seemed like a good place to start

This was a pleasant surprise! I've been wanting to read Maisey Yates for a while now, and this freebie seemed like a good place to start.

I'm so glad I did! The writing was excellent, and I was surprised by how this short novella packed quite the punch! It was sweet, hot, and emotional.

Best friends to lovers isn't one of my favorite tropes because there's never enough tension for me. I was proven wrong with this one, and that makes me incredibly happy.

I'm definitely going to check out the rest of the series!

Take me. Back to English class.

I didn't judge this book by its cover. It took a whole four paragraphs to realize I was going to hate it. Here's the fourth paragraph:

"Thanks to Travis Beringer. Who had wandered away from her at some point during the party. Probably looking to get kissed under the mistletoe. Which was the hazard of bringing a date who would never really be your date."

Normally I don't like to isolate direct quotes in a review because ripping them out of context is unfair, but here context is unnecessary. Do you see the problem? There are no complete sentences there, only fragments. The ENTIRE book is like that. First person narration doesn't have to mean disjointed stream-of-consciousness writing. (See the infinitely better "Intrusion" by Charlotte Stein for an example of first person done right.)

What about the story itself? For a minute I thought a compelling mystery was going to come out of the tragic event that kicks off the book, but no. The friend's messy death is just an excuse for the leads to go to a hotel and have boring sex.

Don't bother with this one.

Loved It!

What a way to start a trilogy! Take Me is the prequel to this series. The stage is set and the next three books will lead up to the conclusion. This novella is about best friends Travis Beringer and Sydney Davis and how their relationship revolves after the shocking death of Sydney's roommate at a Christmas party in 2004. I look forward to following the chain of events in the coming books.

Excellent information, but small format makes it difficult to see drawn images and read.

This is a great book to keep as a reference for recreational or survival camping. This book is PACKED with information and survival camping tips. I only gave it 4 stars instead of 5 for two reasons: 1. This is a smaller format book, 5.3 x 8.3 inches, by 1.5 thick. The format is so small, it's VERY difficult at times to clearly see the small hand-drawn images and read the small text, that's in a handwriting font, that's with the pictures. 2. Because of the small format, the binding fell apart within a few days of receiving this book. There's a larger format version of this book available that's 8.5 x 11 x 1. I would recommend the larger format of this book. I also have the larger format, and the larger format book is definitely a 5 star book that any camper or prepper should own.

Exceeded expectations

I gave this book as a gift to an avid camper. Wasn't sure how it would be received but she started reading it immediately and we went camping the next week. My friend the camper actively used some of the suggestions that week. It really came in handy. The book is great for people who think that there is nothing left to learn or who just like to test methods to see if something works. You too can be a Mr. know it all Rocky! Not as much on catching fish as I had hoped.

This is one of the most complete outdoor/survival guides I have ever read. This book covers everything from fire making, ice and mountain climbing, radio signals, wildlife around the global and even pioneer weather indicators. I truly recommend this book as most have for anyone who enjoys the outdoors.

I didn't not enjoy how the content in this text was composed. It didn't hilite key points and there was a lot of effort required in locating specific sections and navigating concepts. Had to use it for a class ciriculum though. Overall rental experience was great, extremely fast shipping with prime, and free return shipping.
