Islamic Gunpowder Empires provides readers with a history of Islamic civilization in the early modern world through a comparative examination of Islam’s three greatest empires—the Ottomans (centered in what is now Turkey), the Safavids (in modern Iran), and the Mughals (ruling the Indian subcontinent). Author Douglas Streusand explains the origins of the three empires; compares the ideological, institutional, military, and economic contributors to their success; and analyzes the causes of their decline. Streusand depicts the three empires as a part of an integrated international system extending from the Atlantic to the Straits of Malacca and emphasizes both the connections and the conflicts within that system. He presents the empires as complex polities in which Islam is one political and cultural component among many. The treatment of the Ottoman, Safavid, and Mughal empires incorporates contemporary scholarship, dispels common misconceptions, and provides an excellent platform for further study.

About the Author
Douglas E. Streusand has studied Islamic civilization for thirty years. He is professor of international relations at the US Marine Corps Command & Staff College and adjunct professor at the Institute of World Politics. He has previously taught at the University of Maryland College Park, University of Maryland University College, and The Johns Hopkins University School of Continuing Studies. His publications include The Formation of the Mughal Empire in addition to numerous articles and reviews. He earned his PhD from the University of Chicago.

A very useful, largely structural comparative history.

I know of one other book, The Muslim Empires of the Ottomans, Safavids, and Mughals that covers the same territory. I mention that only to state that I am not familiar with that book by Stephen Dale and you may want to look at it before you decide which to buy.
I used the Kindle version of Streusand's book. It is pretty well Kindlized. The footnotes work as they should; taking you effortlessly back and forth to the text. The publisher has not taken the time to paginate the electronic version so you have to find your way around with the Kindle numbers.
There are several useful scholarly apparatus some of which need to be better Kindlized. There is a very useful glossary indicated by the use of italics in the text but you have to jump back and forth from the glossary via the Kindle numbers.
There is a good chronology and a dynastic table for each empire which was helpful to refer to now and then. Streusand includes a bibliographic essay which is an excellent guide to further books to read/study.
The work itself is straight forward. Each empire is introduced with a brief narrative of the main political and military events. Then each empire is examined for ideology, for military strategy and organization, for economy, for religion and for the ways that all these facets of each empire responded to the stresses of their competition among themselves or with various European powers.
I am currently reading a narrative history of the Ottomans by Finkel. She is a wonderful, lucid writer but I found that I understood her much better having come to her book fresh from Streusand's.
I knew very little about any of these empires. I now feel like I can begin to study all three. All-in-all, a quick and very useful read.
I would be curious to hear from someone who has read both this books and Dale's as to their relative merits.

A Comprehensive, Detailed, and Informative Overview

The term "gunpowder empires" to describe the three Islamic empires of early modernity is rather frequently used, even in High School textbooks. However, there are few books that actually give meaning to this term, and this is one of them. There are also not that many books that deal with the three empires, in comparison with each other, viewing them- as they were- as part of an integrated system and civilization. It highlights their similarities- Turkic elite, Irano-Islamic bureaucratic practices, a founding elite that was universal and almost messianic in nature, etc. while also highlighting their differences- the Mughal and Ottoman empires were much more agrarian and much less tribal than the Safavids, while the Ottoman administration was the most developed and most able to collect revenue in contrast to the Safavids and Mughals while often had to rely on intermediaries. These and numerous other details are why this is a book worth reading.

As the author points out, the historiography of the three empires is different in detail and focus. The Ottoman Empire is the best documented owing to a variety of factors such as survival of records, and proximity to Europe. Fortunately, there are many works on the Ottoman Empire and this book is essentially a review of much of it. Readers familiar with its history might not find much new material here although there is more focus on its internal developments. One advantage this book has is this focus on the Ottoman Empire as a Muslim state with attention to its legal, religious, and provincial aspects. Many histories on the Ottoman Empire focus on its foreign policy, its relation to Europe, and the Balkans, and sometimes one feels as though Egypt and Iraq vanish from history for 300 years when reading about the Ottomans.

The Safavid Empire's section is the most interesting, unique, and useful. Shockingly, there are few works in English on this Empire despite the fact is it not very obscure. In fact, the Safavid Empire ought to be studied more not only because it is interesting in and of itself but because it transformed Iran into a Shi'a state, which is of great import and impact to the present geopolitical situation in the Middle East. Some figures from the Safavid Empire, such as its founder Ismail I have fascinating biographies that are little heard (he won battles and was crowned Shah at the age of 14). In short, the study of Iran in this period is an interesting case of a state that was halfway between a tribal confederation, like among Central Asian tribes and a settled state, like among the Ottomans, Mughals, Europeans, or Chinese.

The Mughals, like the Ottomans are relatively more well known than other Islamic states of the period. Some of these Islamic states are completely left out, such as the Uzbek Khanate of Bukhara which was the main power in Central Asia during this period, though fortunately it gets more mention in this book than most other books. As for the Mughals, they have a rich and colorful history which is often told in the form of stories, narratives, and tales in other sources. The Baburnama, the diary/autobiography of the founder of the Mughal Empire Babur is one such read, vivid in its details and frankness. There are also numerous excellent Bollywood movies, relatively easy to access on the Mughal period and they convey a sense or window into the Mughal world. I mention these in order to point out that there is actually quite a lot story telling and pop culture availability on the Mughal Empire which is quite scarce for the Safavid Empire and not as prolific for the Ottoman Empire. A book like this is a good complement to the movies, shows, and books on the Mughals while rectifying some of the problems this proliferation creates by dealing with real history and the economic and social development of the Mughals. Additionally, since the Mughal period is often viewed through post-Mughal ideological lenses, such as the colonial or anti-colonial narrative or Hindu-Muslim relations, this book provides a more objective and neutral overview of this period.

To conclude, this book is an excellent resource and overview of these three empires. It is good for anyone who wants to gain a general understanding of these empires or for anyone looking for a starting point for further research on any of the aspects of these empires. It could be used as a textbook for undergraduates and is in fact an excellent choice for such a purpose but it does not read like a textbook and is informative for people from any background.

Very interesting and easy to understand book about presentation design. Highly recommended.

Introduction about the difference from art and design. The author highlights that design is a form of business oriented art. Therefore the main focus of a designer is not to achieve beauty but to achieve communication effectiveness.

Useful section about the theory of colors applied to Presentation making. Here you will find plenty of learnings from the world of the User experience Design and Neuromarketing
M3: PRESENTATION DESIGN PROCESS
It’s PowerPoint time but you do not know where to start? The author gives a structured way to go through the whole presentation design process. Follow this and you will end up with a beautiful deck.
M4: PRESENTATION DESIGN TECHNIQUES

This book merges together communication and design to deliver an innovative easy to use approach for making beautiful presentations.
The book shows a well-balanced theoretical and pragmatic approach. I really appreciated the author’s approach to introduce theoretical concepts and to put them into the day to day practice of making slides. For example the book includes an extensive analysis of the theory of colors and how they affect the audience’s perception. It provides tons of useful tricks on how to make texts stand out on background pictures.
I also found very interesting the “font structure” section (Module 2 of the book) where the author provides a handful set of 5 different evergreen fonts for every occasion.
If you do presentations, I think this is a must to have manual on your desk!
PS. I do recommend to buy the paperback (see my photo) because it is much more comfortable to consult.

About the Author
Now regarded by many as the world authority on Indian food, Madhur Jaffrey was born in Delhi and is an award-winning actress and bestselling cookery author. Curries good enough to please the zealots!

I was lucky enough to have a friend from the UK host a curry dinner using the recipes from this book. I was blown away by the authenticity of the curries and the ease with which she was able to make them. I was that taken with the quality of recipes I bought my own copy. I haven't been disappointed.

Seriously, if you want to taste authentic curries without having to travel to Asia, try this book. Just make sure you buy fresh herbs and spices. I recommend buying smaller amounts, so that you only use what you need. That way the spices don't go stale on you.

In this powerful memoir, Charles Dew, one of America’s most respected historians of the South--and particularly its history of slavery--turns the focus on his own life, which began not in the halls of enlightenment but in a society unequivocally committed to segregation.

Dew re-creates the midcentury American South of his childhood--in many respects a boy’s paradise, but one stained by Lost Cause revisionism and, worse, by the full brunt of Jim Crow. Through entertainments and "educational" books that belittled African Americans, as well as the living examples of his own family, Dew was indoctrinated in a white supremacy that, at best, was condescendingly paternalistic and, at worst, brutally intolerant. The fear that southern culture, and the "hallowed white male brotherhood," could come undone through the slightest flexibility in the color line gave the Jim Crow mindset its distinctly unyielding quality. Dew recalls his father, in most regards a decent man, becoming livid over a black tradesman daring to use the front, and not the back, door.

The second half of the book shows how this former Confederate youth and descendant of Thomas Roderick Dew, one of slavery’s most passionate apologists, went on to reject his racist upbringing and become a scholar of the South and its deeply conflicted history. The centerpiece of Dew’s story is his sobering discovery of a price circular from 1860--an itemized list of humans up for sale. Contemplating this document becomes Dew’s first step in an exploration of antebellum Richmond’s slave trade that investigates the terrible--but, to its white participants, unremarkable--inhumanity inherent in the institution.

Dew’s wish with this book is to show how the South of his childhood came into being, poisoning the minds even of honorable people, and to answer the question put to him by Illinois Browning Culver, the African American woman who devoted decades of her life to serving his family: "Charles, why do the grown-ups put so much hate in the children?"

Wanted more

After listening to an interview with Charles Dew, I eagerly anticipated this book. Unfortunately, in spite of Dew's engaging style and thoughtful memories, I was left wanting. The first part of the book deals with Dew's own experience of learning from day one that the Confederacy still existed, that African Americans were inferior, how his parents were complicit in those lessons, and the moments the veil fell from his eyes and he no longer was blind to racism in his family and world. The second part deals with the history of the dehumanization of enslaved people, owner and overseer history and how the institution was perpetuated without guilt.

The author adequately describes the struggle of loving one's parents but not loving the words they spoke or how they treated others. He describes the time when he felt his pangs of guilt over racist jokes or treatment of others. He states his case by how his students react to his stories and the slave sale documents and letters he has them read.

Dew does ask the question that I wonder, "How do people see evil right in front of them and do nothing?" But that is never answered. More's the pity. He toes a line between loving his parents and excusing them that for me was hard to read, though I understood it. I believe the overbearing presence of white privilege in his life was not fully discussed on a personal level even as this was a memoir.

Racism in America: From slavery to Jim Crow

A well written and thought provoking look at the roots of racism in America, using a study of slavery as its basis. Thoroughly annotated. Both historical and personal in its approach. One of the main questions still not answered: how did all of the people who supported the slave trade, either as buyers or sellers, and later the cruelty of the Jim Crow South overlook the inhumanity it required? But maybe that is an impossible question to answer satisfactorily. Anyone perplexed by racism in America should read this.

Another must-read, especially by older white Southerners. I've lived in the South for the past 54 of my 75 years so I qualify!! The book, written by an older white Southern historian, sheds light on my observations over the past 54 years of living in the South. It is a fascinating read - extensively researched- and I couldn't put it down.

While Riaan’s journey allowed him to experience some of the greatest generosity and kindness that he had ever encountered, often from the poorest of the poor, his adventures were also often of a more harrowing kind. In Around Africa on my Bike, Riaan allows the reader to relive the toil, excitement and occasional terror of his journey - negotiating the Sahara and Libyan deserts, learning French, Portuguese and Arabic, eating monkey, rat and bat, standing in front of the pyramids, being awarded the freedom of the Red Sea in Egypt, feeding hyenas mouth to mouth, and standing on the highest, as well as at the lowest, points in Africa. Riaan arrived safely in Cape Town on 25 November 2005.

A bicycle adventure of heart and spirit

.At first I thought Riaan was a bit of a self-promoter. But as his story unfolded it was obvious that he needed every bit of promotion, courage, charm, toughness, luck and spirit to accomplish a near impossible bicycle journey, circumnavigating a continent riven by corruption and suspicion of ones neighbors. At times the book seemed like an endless loop of getting to a border, being turned back, and finding a way forward again. It is true he was helped along the way by many fellow expatriate South Africans, but it was also many ordinary Africans who lifted their hand in kindness to Riaan as well.

Good for you, Riaan, and an adventure of the body and spirit well worth reading!

Living the example - an exceptional voyage by an exceptional man

A well written travel book of a very special kind. Riaan Manser did what nobody would ever have dared to consider: taking the longest possible road around Africa, he bicycled through the most dangerous countries in the most dangerous times of unrest and social trouble. The resulting two year adventure was an exceptional physical achievement and a sort of initiation into humanity. In his simple and honest way of narrating the events, as well as his own physical and psychological struggles, Riaan gets some of what he learned across to the reader. Having traveled extensively myself, I really enjoyed every page and learned a lot from this book, in particular a deep respect of African people and their cultures.

Riaan is an amazing person

it was an exciting and a most interesting read. It tended to be a bit diary-ised at times which is understandable but somewhat too detailed for me. Clearly Riaan Manser is a very courageous man, fortunately he was well supported to achieve his dreams.
