Looking to the Upper Story

The bigger picture has always captivated me.

The idea that God is on a rescue mission to restore the world He created and the people in it to relationship with Him-- and how everything in the story of our lives, and all the individual stories we're living, are all working together to that end, and how, in fact, we are invited to play a part in that rescue mission story... It puts things in perspective.

Randy Frazee calls this bigger picture the 'upper story' in his book The Heart of the Story: God's Masterful Design to Restore His People. He calls our circumstances as we see them through our human experiences the 'lower story'. What I loved about this book was the idea of taking the whole entire bible--the hundreds of memorable and not so memorable 'lower' stories of human experience -- and making a basic summary of it to repaint it in light of the upper story, the bigger picture. In these stories innumerable many of us have grown up hearing about, the characters were firmly entrenched in their own lower stories of human circumstance, just like you and I. And yet, when we stand back and look at the bigger picture the Word of God is showing, we can see the upper story significance of each individual character's lower story (Have I driven home enough the 'story' idea yet?). There is something so innately encouraging in that. I happen to be firmly entrenched in my own lower story, and need constant reminders of that upper story God's unfolding just beyond my human vision, closer than my circumstances tell...

I was excited when I was offered this book for review because I relished the idea of digesting the whole entire story of the Bible all in one big gulp. Frazee, a teaching pastor by vocation and the author of numerous previous books, didn't disappoint in his anecdotal summary. I often get tripped up in the minor prophets. I take them one by one as moving pieces of literature, but struggle to fit them into the chronological narrative of Israel's story. The Heart of the Story helpfully wove the myriad of true tales together in a way that I could cognitively see where they fit into the story in history. And Frazee did it while also lifting the reader's eyes up to the way it all fits into the bigger picture / upper story.

If I could make any criticisms about this book, they would be only from a point of view of my admittedly snobby literaturary tastes :) I sometimes found his writing style a bit juvenile, as if he was trying too hard to sound 'cool', but because I believe this was an effort to make God's Word approachable by anyone, I think we should let it slide ;) It was extremely readable and that can be hard to find when it comes to wrestling with Biblical literature and matters of Theology.

All that said, I think you should read this book!

Good Primer on the Biblical Storyline

I think of people in my church right now.

We have a mix of people who are searching, but have not yet made a faith committment, new in the faith, but don't know how to read the bible, learning basic bible stories since they have never read the bible before.

Our church has many people who lack a basic biblical literacy that Christians have. They are new believers from unchurched background who are just now starting to read scriptures.

Like the newest members of our church congregation, if you are not familiar with the story line of Scripture, The Heart of the Story would be a great place to start.

I can imagine churches giving this book to first time church visitors, new Christians, or even in using The Heart of the Story in a seeker oriented class. It could also serve a rightful place in a Christianity 101 type class, or as a personal 31 day devotional.

If you are just starting out in your Christian walk and want to have that big-picture overview of the narrative of Scripture, Frazee can be your guide. Along the way, Frazee makes several connections to our current life, particularly about how God can use ordinary and even unlikely people to advance His plan.

Great book! Easy to read.

Have you ever wondered what you are missing? Why on earth is Numbers and Leviticus included in the Bible? Why must we suffer through some of the Old Testament. Why can't I just read the gospels and forget the rest? In his book The Heart of the Story by Randy Frazee he takes you on a journey. the thing is this journey is about YOU. It is about how God designed all of history to restore us His people. Randy steps us through many of the Major stories of the Bible from Genesis to Revelations and shows how these books and stories are apart of us. I once heard that in order to fully understand who you are you need to understand where you came from. This history included in the scriptures helps us to see God's design! The same God who has placed such detailed order and design to even the tiniest of molecules to the most distant star that no one might ever see; this same God has woven a detail into us that we need to understand. Thanks to Zondervan for giving me this chance to read this advanced copy. I recomend this book for personal, church, and small group study! This book is full of magic tricks that rely on science...and the range is pretty amazing...from fully performable stage pieces (the cups prove your audience's psychokinetic abilities) to how to turn your regular TV into a 3-D TV! That kid interested in Magic Tricks will love this easy to do magic book.

I both illustrated the book and am a professional magician, so my bias is based on experience. This is a good book to get or give, written by an excellent intellect and priced below it's value. Recommended!

Great read! Very informative.

Steve Giannangelo is one of the best researchers I've come across, and it shows in his book. Most books on the subject of serial killers are consistently watered down with same old crime scene descriptions and attempts to simply scare the reader.

Giannangelo takes the ultimately rare approach of observing everything to do with the biological and environmental make-up of some of the world's worst monsters. This book proves through facts and clever observation that it's neither nature versus nurture that drives these select few to serial murder, but both.

Also, the mystery killer section is an extremely fascinating addition to an already fascinating book. I couldn't recommend this more emphatically!

One of the best books on serial killer analysis

One of the best books on serial killer analysis. Giannangelo looks at the biological/environmental factors. One of the best features is that this author does not write a blow-by-blow detailed account of each killer's deeds. We all know these individuals and most who are interested in this subject already know the details. It's where he goes from there that counts. Another plus here is an interview with an unnamed serial killer who was willing to talk. Not like Bundy, who offered catchy glimpses in the third person, nor an "If I did it" tease. The guy seems just as bewildered by his actions as the rest of us. Finally, the author outlines some ideas for subsequent follow up books which could flesh out the many mysteries still held within these people. Recommended.

Refreshing and Riveting!

This is a serious book but highly readable for anyone interested in the 'why' of serial murder. This is one of the best books on this topic that I have read and I have read a great many! It offers a comprehensive review of the different areas of research into serial murder. Most books on this subject will be by people with a myopic view of the issue centred around their area of expertise which almost always suffers from tunnel vision. The author considers nature/nurture aspects, reviews eight case studies, develops a model and proposes serial murder as a diagnosable condition.

There are no wasted words in this book and reads like a much thicker book. There's just no filler and every sentence has some meat to it. Wording is very concise and clear and the book is well organized and referenced.

Refreshing!
One of the things that really stands out is the author's willingness to be flexible in his thinking; to reconsider his theory when new information comes along including what a serial killer has to say! It's a refreshing change to read a book by someone in this field who comes across as genuinely interested in contributing to the solution with no egotistical agenda in sight or defensive posturing unlike some books I could name.

Riveting!
The conversations he has with the un-named serial killer are riveting both for what the killer has to say and for the interaction between the two of them. The serial killer is an unusual one; not your typical grandiose, attention seeking, self-absobed psychopath. I would love to hear more! I hope there's a sequel.

There's a review/summary of the book by Katherine Ramsland, on her blog called Shadow Boxing on Psychology Today. The article is entitled "Homicidal Pattern Disorder". I found it helpful.

As Ramsland says, it's a serious book but it's a fascinating one too!

Beautiful, Vibrant, and Fun: A Must-Have Retrospective of Fashion Illustration

Masters of Fashion Illustration is not a book I was looking for; it found me, by way of a "you might like" email from Amazon. Normally such an email gets dispatched to the trash in no short order. But I'm delighted--absolutely delighted--that I happened to see this suggestion, took a chance, and bought it.

The book encompasses a 100-year arc in fashion illustration, from one turn-of-the-century to another (the 1900's to the early 2000's). In addition to the plentiful full-color illustrations, each chapter contains introductory--yet substantial--text that situates the movement and/or the particular artist within the context of the time. There are five major sections: The Age of Opulence; An Emergine Line (which are illustrations from the 1930's); The New Graphisme (1940's and 1950's); From the Salon to the Street (1960's through 1980's); and a section on author David Downton's work, spanning from the late 1990's through 2009. As for the actual illustrations, gorgeous watercolors and pen-and-ink washes abound. Gouache is also a popular medium for the illustrations selected, but oil pastel, acrylic, charcoal, marker, and even collage are also represented. The illustrations are most often in full-page or half-page format; occasionally they will actually take up a 2-page spread. Very rarely are the illustrations less than 1/4 page.

It's a nice size book--the 8-1/2" x 11" size is reminiscent of an artist's notebook, which suits the subject. The production values are very high, with lovely thick paper that is nice to the touch. The illustrations appear to have an eggshell finish and the colors--from the most subtle pastels to super-saturated brights--are all beautifully reproduced.

Downton's passion for both illustration and fashion serves him well as the author of this book. Perhaps shamefully, I admit I had my doubts when I saw that the author was an illustrator. Downton's writing, however, is smooth and readable; he is knowledgeable and thorough without being academic or a bore.

Previous fashion illustration books I've bought have all been how-to; this one, alas, doesn't provide step-by-step instruction, nor does it pretend to. What it does provide is inspiration and plenty of eye candy. And for the alert student, there is an education to be had here; these masters show us how it's done.

A lovely book

Beautifully produced and executed book on a now (sadly) lost art form. The days of most of the great fashion illustrators died back in the mid-eighties. Killed by changes in technology and the market. If you'd like to see what stylish and elegance fashion illustration used to be, this is the best place to start looking.

A Personal Selection

I decided to buy this book because Downton has made a selection of his own favourite or influential illustrators/artists, and you can see certain elements in the brush work or lines that lead up nicely to the last section of the book focusing on his own work (about 25% of the book). He gives 1-2 pages of history of each artist and a sampling of their works. I would say that this is a good introduction to fashion illustration from the point of view of one of today's talented artists, and is a good stepping stone into further research on your own. The pages are large and heavy paper with large images so you can see the linework clearly.
