Good Book of a Great Man

Briskly paced, exciting read. The scope of Luther's life is staggering. Should he not be considered the most influential figure of the last two millennia? I find it truly fantastic that God used a single man to up-end the religious, economic, social, and even artistic, climates of Europe. What remained untouched?

This is a good read. Though the first Lutheran biography I've read, I'm a little surprised at how highly this work is praised. Many other biographies that I've read are styled and narrated better. Perhaps this is because to understand Luther you must understand the development of Luther's thought worldview before you consider any of his life's consequences. Luther is ever quotable and thankfully Bainton doesn't shy away from a modest number of quotes including excerpts from sermons and Table Talk. The biography is generally balanced considering its only a 400 page book. Luther was a complex man, mostly balanced but not without contradiction. This biography takes on the same sense of proportion. Like most biographers, Bainton seems eager to praise and quick to move past shortcomings.

"Here I Stand" highlights the man's theology and his passion for truth yet Bainton doesn't to show the reader the trailheads of all that the Reformation brought about. At the end of the book the reader is treated to brief sections on Luther's preaching, his hymns, his prayers and his depression.

At times, I found Bainton's writing style a bit bland. Lutheran quotations provided frequent relief. In the hardback Hendrickson edition, more than 50 illustrations are included and serve to compliment rather than distract from the author's ideas.

The Reformation is nothing less than a rediscovery of the Bible and the Gospel. Luther is nothing less than the Father of the Reformation. This is a good book of a great man.

An excellent read

First of all, the seller shipped this book to me quickly. It arrived in excellent shape and except for a little "yellowing" of the edges of the pages, it was in perfect condition for something printed in the early 1950's. I was glad to read this book and I figure to do so once a year or so. You see, I owe Dr. Martin Luther a lot. I grew up in a very strict, Baptist home; keeping the rules was of the highest importance and we did so out of obligation. Later I was a student at Bob Jones University and they taught "keeping the rules", "Doing X-Y- and Z" in order to be right with God, but I began to realize from the study of scripture, exactly as did Martin Luther, that saving faith is a gift from God himself and not an achievement you can gain by carefully observing the rules. Sincerity and extra effort don't endear us to God at all. It takes a little while to un-learn what you've been taught for years, but thank the Lord he stayed with me and I can say now, as did Luther then, that the Christian life is simply a life lived in gratitude for what Christ has done for us - not for what we can do for ourselves. He took the penalty of our sins upon himself on the cross and we are declared "not-guilty" before God. That gift is ours by faith, which is relying on Christ's work - the faith that God gives us. What could be more simple yet so complex because it runs entirely counter to the way our human minds tend to work? Much of the work that Dr. Luther did was to preach, write and teach that we're made God's children - believers - by what Christ has done for us, without any help from us. Thank the Lord for his grace, for the life and testimony of Dr. Luther and for the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod. The Lord's richest blessings to you.

The author is an excellent, eloquent

I learned much from this book. The author is an excellent, eloquent, and engaging writer. He is very objective and fair, for the most part. I admire Luther even more though i still dislike him for his treatment of the Anabaptists. I wish Luther would have been apolitical and just focused on doing God's work. The author does show that he did not like politics and for the most part, stayed out. But when he did, I believe, he failed.

Recommendable

Diabetes is one of the reasons I became interested in the Wheat Belly Diet. Not only 3 of my grandparents, but my mom and all of her 4 siblings are suffering from diabetes, and my mom was the first to be apply this diet to her lifestyle. From the experience she had, and the great results (which included a great improvement in her heath and weight loss), I was encouraged to try it myself.
And I want to say this; If you want to do yourself, and your family the BEST thing you can do, the feed them better and healthier, and this book is the right thing for that!
It has lots of great and simple recipes and I have tried a few and they were very good. I enjoyed them and you will too :)

I deeply recommend this book!

This stuff really works! I was absolutely tired of my wheat belly and the uncomfortable feeling of being fat. That is why I decided to look for some help and bought this awesome book! It is full of recipes and different options for every day. Not only does it include healthy options, but the most important is that you will not be hungry during this diet. Losing weight is one of the most difficult challenges you can set yourself up to, but with this book it is much easier. You have to try it out! It certainly helped me.

Great Variety

I've looked at some wheat-free options but never seen a collection of recipes that had this much variety. I like that the author gave the readers so many different options for bread recipes. I also like that she took the time to explain why wheat is such a "bad guy" and the issues it can cause when it is left in our diets. This book is a nice collection of gluten free or wheat free recipes that are easy to make. Great resource for my kitchen!

Where's My Aircar?

In the 1950s when I was an avid reader of science fiction, I assumed that by now we would all be flitting through the air in levitating antigravity aircars like those in "The Jetsons" and the Starwars films. What happened? Paul LaViolette tells us what happened. The technology that would make it all possible has been swept up by the military-industrial complex and locked away in a vault of intense secrecy.

A physicist by the name of Thomas Townsend Brown, began research on electrogravitics during the 1920s. His revolutionary work on gravity control made him an important man in the scientific world. He took out patents and developed numerous working models of antigravity machines which strongly resembled our popular images of flying saucers.

During World War 2 he was inducted into the US Navy to continue his research for military purposes. It appears likely that he was involved in the notorious Philadelphia Experiment as a result of which he was forced to resign. Complete records of his military service and the circumstances of his discharge are missing.

He continued his research efforts for various corporations and laboratories until his death in 1985 but he had apparently lost the military's full confidence and he received little if any government financing. Meanwhile, the military continued with their own gravity control projects as did many of the country's largest defense contractors. Although the details of their research were kept secret, they made no secret of the fact that such research was being conducted and that it would have a tremendous impact. That was true until the 1960s when the military clamped down the lid of total secrecy, apparently, because there had been a major breakthrough. All public discussion of such research came to an abrupt halt and electrogravitics was moved into the realm of "black technology".

The practical application of gravity control seems to based on the physics of subquantum kinetics as apposed to the "classical" but incompatible physics of general relativity and quantum mechanics. According to LaViollette, the theory of subquantum kinetics successfully overcomes many of the problems associated with "classical" theories. I am absolutely not qualified to have an opinion about this nor on the extensive mathematics that he offers by way of explanation. Judging by what's available on the internet, LaViolette has the field of subquantum kinetics pretty much to himself, which makes him a lone genius or a foolish crank. On the other hand, there don't seem to be many physicists out there who have bothered to refute LaViollette's theories. All I know is, this book doesn't read like the work of a fool or a crank.

Subquantum kinetics theory permits velocities at many multiples of the speed of light, something considered impossible under the theory of relativity. LaViolette explains how a superluminal spaceship might be powered using electrogravitic technology. It has been used by scientists and engineers (blessed with virtually unlimited funding and unhindered by concerns of conformity and "respectability" that permeate academic science) working on "black projects" since at least the 1950s.

According to LaViolette, the USAF's B-2 bomber seems to incorporate electrogravitic principles in its design and construction which give it performance capabilities, such as the ability to hover silently, that are never seen publicly. It would appear that most, if not all, unexplained UFO incidents involve terrestrial military research aircraft. Since military electrogravitic technology (assuming it exists) is shrouded in secrecy, there is no way of knowing one way or the other, but he makes a convincing case.

Nick Cook's "The Hunt for Zero Point" is a good book to read in conjunction with LaViollette's work. It is much less technical and mostly concerns his investigation into the world of black technology.

Given the current state of humanity, perhaps it's a good thing we don't all have aircars. Think of the problems. Humans would be free to do anywhere, spewing their pollution, garbage, destruction, and bombs at will. There would be no defense. Fences would be useless. The entire planet would soon look like a landfill or worse. I, for one, am willing to wait for intelligent life to appear on Earth before turning electrogravitics loose.

If it turns out that this book is generally correct then it will deserve 5 stars.

After years of working at DOE and reading all kinds of research on different aspects of physics, I have to compliment Paul LaViolette on an astounding book. Sometimes, you have to jump off the deep end and dive down into concepts that feel threatening and challenge everything you know. I am not done with this book...it will continue to make me think, dream, and theorize about these ideas for the rest of my life. NOBODY should take this material for granted. It will challenge you, excite you, make you want to cry, and ultimately, drive you to experiment on your own. I don't have to worry about the challenge I'm including in this review because if you've read this far, you have the stamina to go further. Take it on!

The Nuts & Bolts of the Gravity Mechanism

This has truly got to be the gold standard whereby all literature on the nonconventional or unorthodox views on gravity is gauged. I found that it is not only well and quite soberly written and gives every appearance of being thoroughly researched, but is easily comprehensible to anyone who has had at least second year college physics and the associated calculus and even at that there is actually very minimal advanced mathematics which, for those not familiar with vector calculus notation, can be skipped with little or no loss in continuity of discussion.

The main thesis here is that, as initially difficult to accept as it might seem, gravity and electrostatic force are in fact directly related to the extent that both electrostatic and gravitational force are gradient scalar field potentials
and more significantly that gravitational force between two masses can be either mutually repulsive or attractive in effect.....specifically, a positively charged proton produces a "well" in gravitational potential while the corresponding negatively charged electron allegedly creates a gravitational "hill" but much smaller because the electron has approximately 1 / 1840th of the inertial mass of the proton thusly accounting for the net effect of "attraction" between two electrically neutral physical masses. Certainly an intriguing concept even if as yet remaining to be proven "beyond any reasonable doubt and to a moral certainty" until an even more comprehensive theory should emerge.

Author Paul LaViolette also explores much of the personal history of Thomas Townsend Brown and his experimentation with the "electrokinetic thrust" device, the patent for which I have personally seen at the U.S. Patent Office in Sacramento and a full copy of which I have in my files from the Sunnyvale Patent Office Library. There is flatly no question whatsoever that the patent has very much always existed since originally issued...the question is whether the design actually does work as proposed and if so, what is the exact theory of operation and does it truly prove that the largely plagiarized so-called "Einstein" Theory of Gravitation (General Relativity) is either in grave error or must be radically modified or revised. The works of Charles Fort were not for those intimidated by the idea of thinking outside the box of conventional science and neither is this particular treatise...but for anyone considering himself to be of true intellectual courage and willing to impartially examine and ponder, even while not blindly accepting, a few offbeat concepts of gravity and a host of other fascinating material on antigrav and alternative propulsion that have been set forth throughout the last century, this is a must read.

As a final note, it was cited briefly in Max Born's benchmark compilation of atomic research in the first half of the 20th century, ATOMIK PHYSIK, that the brilliant German physicist, Artur Sommerfeld, had conceived of a "Quantum Theory of Gravitation" (1942), but the text did not go into any detail whatsoever other than mere mention of its existence.

Much More Than Expected - Books Like This Are A Must Have

This is a great book. It's that simple. If you're at all interested in classic or vintage tattoos then let this be your first book on the subject, or if you have other tattoo topic books, then you need to add this to that collection.

I was interested in a book on old school or vintage tattoos. My main purpose was to learn a little bit more about Sailor Jerry Collins and his influences. I thought maybe there would be some other interesting tidbits of information on the history of what we now consider "vintage tattoos" and maybe some cool pictures - what I got was an amazing surprise.

There is so much fantastic and detailed information - none of it boring. The book takes you on an incredible journey through time, style, artists and even equipment.

Even if you don't know how to read, the pictures and old flash of these vintage tattoos are worth the price of admission ... ok, the price of the book, but you get the point.

Whether you're looking for tattoo ideas, a tattoo history lesson or want to have a unique perspective on vintage tattoos - this is a must add to your bookshelf.

Professor Close researches, teaches, and serves in the marketing community. A main interest is in event marketing–namely how consumers’ experiences at sponsored events influence attitudes and consumer behavior. This research explains: engaging consumers with events, uncovering drivers of effective event sponsorships, how entertainment impacts affect towards events/purchase intention towards sponsors, the role of sponsor-event congruity, and why consumers may resist events. A scholarly book edited with Lynn Kahle, Ph.D., Consumer Behavior Knowledge for Effective Sports and Event Marketing (Routledge, 2011) synthesizes thinking in the area of sports and events.

Synergistically, Professor Close researches consumer experiences with electronic marketplaces–online experiences, and how they interplay with on-ground events. One of the goals of this current volume is to bring forward new thought in this topic. Her research ties theory with implications for consumers, society, or consumer-focused business practice. Professor Close has contributed over a dozen peer-reviewed research publications and book chapters. These appear in the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, Advances in Consumer Research, Journal of Advertising Research, and Journal of Business Research, among others. This research has been featured on CBS, and in The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, New Scientist, The St. Petersburg Times, and The Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Where creating knowledge via research is important, Professor Close believes that disseminating knowledge is crucial to move the field forward and to inspire young minds. She is currently teaching Integrated Communication Management, and she has taught MBA Market Opportunity Analysis, Marketing Management, Advertising, Integrated Marketing Communication, International Marketing, Strategy, and Sales/Promotions courses. A goal of this teaching is to spark student interest in the fields of advertising and marketing by involving students with research projects, co-collaborating on new ideas, and hosting esteemed marketing executives. She takes pride in engaging students’ thinking in marketing theories and applications, especially in the local entertainment and technology economies.

For community service, Professor Close serves the local and national marketing and academic communities. Nationally, she serves as President of the American Marketing Association’s Consumer Behavior division (CBSIG.org). Involved with doctoral education, she serves on the Board of Directors to current doctoral students AMA’s doctoral student group. She serves various leadership roles for the Association for Consumer Research, Society for Marketing Advances, and Academy of Marketing Science.

Professor Close brings experience as a marketing research consultant, as she has contributed marketing research projects for: Hallmark, Coca-Cola, Dodge, Ford, Cingular, New Media Institute, Harvey’s Grocery, United Community Bank, AT&T, Fashion Show Mall, Suzuki, Tour de GA, Road Atlanta, Red Rock Country Club, and Lexus.

Prior to joining Texas Advertising, Professor Close served the University of Nevada, Las Vegas’s business faculty for five years. Prior to that, she studied advertising and marketing at the University of Georgia’s Grady College of Journalism & Mass Communication (ABJ 1997; MMC 2000) and the Terry College of Business (Ph.D. 2006). Beyond her passion for advertising and marketing, she enjoys spending time with her husband Ben and baby Corbyn, playing tennis, volunteering, and travelling.

After a bizarre shooting of a policeman and an equally bizarre trial, Abu-Jamal was convicted of murder and sentenced to Pennsylvania's death row. Twelve years later, he is still there, although new evidence has been found to support his innocence. This volume is a collection of his writings, which, for the most part, document the atrocities of prison life. The reader may sympathize with Abu-Jamal's plight and even question his guilt in the shooting but will probably find this book fragmented and sketchy. Instead of a continuous narrative, Abu-Jamal offers brief notes drawn together under one theme. Good prose is drowned by ravings and accusations. One can see why Abu-Jamal's commentaries on National Public Radio were abruptly canceled. The book will probably not be of value to public or academic libraries. This is a revolutionary classic

Mumia Abu-Jamal is an award winning journalist who became a political prisoner when he was convicted for murder based on tampered evidence, police misconduct and determination of the state to keep him quiet. The state failed in that attempt. He has written many brilliant books read all around the world. He is commonly called 'The Voice of the Voiceless'.

He rarely writes about himself, but comments on life on death row, about current affairs, about the need for people to come together to change the world. I would recommend this book to anyone looking to find an understanding of why the world is the way it is today and how to change it.

Delivered on everything it promised .it was real, honest and touched a nerve that made your heart pound. Mr. Abu-Jamal manages to write with such meaning and purpose despite the dire circumstances that he must face day to day. If this book doesn't open society's eyes about the unjust corrupt justice system not to mention the racism still very much alive in our cities.....nothing will.

"The Price of Eggs in China" finds gifted furniture designer Dean Kaneshiro caught in the middle of a feud between his girlfriend, Caroline Yip, and Marcella Ahn (aka the Oriental Hair Poets). Caroline is convinced that the more successful Marcella exists only to torment her, and Dean hatches a dubious plan to end their years-old rivalry. In "Voir Dire," public defender Hank Low Kwon grapples with his representation of a cocaine addict accused of beating his girlfriend's infant son to death. Hank's anxiety over the case and his occupation in general is exacerbated by the pregnancy of his own girlfriend, Molly, a blonde diving coach. And Korean-American oncologist Eugene Kim contemplates the peculiarities of mixed-race romances in "Domo Arigato," recalling an ill-fated weekend spent in Japan 20 years ago with a white girlfriend and her parents. Eugene wonders if "you couldn't overcome the hatreds of countries or race, any more than you could forgive someone for breaking your heart." Just imagine Annie Yung. She's 38, with a good software job in Silicon Valley, but now she's listening to Patsy Cline, wearing tight jeans, cowboy boots, and a "bleached-blonde hairdo that looked for all the world like a plastic stalagmite." She's looking for love in a cowboy bar in Rosarita Bay (aka Half Moon Bay, California). It's no surprise that the guy she meets turns out to have as many complications as she does. And Annie is typical of the Asian American characters you'll meet in these lyrical and intriguing short stories. There's surfer Duncan Roh, whose search for a woman to marry is getting nowhere. One of his lovers is a reference librarian whom he met at a meditation class where she was seeking relief from the great stress in her life caused by people asking stupid questions. She dumps Duncan for his lack of self-awareness. Each of Lee's achingly vulnerable characters deals with totally believable fears, plus an added layer of racial awareness. The final story, "Yellow," sums it all up in the struggles of handsome Danny Kim, whose perspective is continually skewed by his fear of racism. The Rosarita Bay setting provides connection, but the characters also mingle, adding texture to a compelling, beautifully written collection. Peggy Barber

An Intelligent and Updated View

In an interview, Lee mentions Anderson's Winesburg, Ohio and Joyce's Dubliners as literary influences for his seminal work of short stories, Yellow (2001), which focuses on the lives of Asian-Americans living or connected to Rosarita Bay, modeled after Half Moon Bay, California.

Lee's book avoids immigrant narratives focusing instead on the lives of Asian-Americans who experience themselves as "American" without the carrying the complex weight of moving from one country to another. While one may encounter shadows of post-diasporic experience in the stories, "Casual Water" and "Yellow", Lee does not preoccupy readers with plot lines most often associated with the work of more commonly known Asian-American writers.

Instead, he illustrates well the various issues assimilated Asian-Americans face as they live in a country where occasionally, they are reminded of their immigration status, regardless of whether they have been born in the United States. For Lee, race politics includes a Chinese thug who questions his Korean-American attorney about his white girlfriend in "Voir Dire", presuming that a white girlfriend automatically indicates a form of race treachery. Annie Yung, in the delightful, "Lone Night Cantina", assumes a cowgirl identity only to find herself facing the problems with assuming an identity that is not authentic to her person.

Some Asian-American students will react to Yellow by arguing that they do not find Lee's characters "Asian" enough which begs the question: What does it mean to be Asian/Asian-American and what are the risks of narrowly-defining characteristics that ultimately lead to essentialism. Feminists have been right to point out how essentialism damages women and similarly, readers can bring their assumptions to the book so long as they understand that reading Lee's work may cast new light and perhaps, widen the spectrum of race representation. Readers who presume to know what "Asian" is may find themselves struggling with Lee's honest portrayal which avoids reinforcing images of Asian-Americans as perpetually struggling, self-hating, or striking nationalistic attitudes. Marked with a fluidity of language and expression, Lee's affection for his characters allows them genuine epiphanies without sentimentalism.

Eight-Legged Perfection

I don't think I've ever encountered a collection of stories where every single story fulfilled me so thoroughly. There are eight gems in Yellow, seven decent-sized stories and one long one, the titular tale that may be the most accomplished of the lot. That story chronicles the life of Danny Kim, who is doing exactly what FDR told everyone not to: fearing fear itself. The fear in Danny's life is racism, and he's never actually hurt by it in any grand fashion, probably because he heads it off (or at least thinks he heads it off). His character is fascinating and yet very believable: he's the kind of guy who, at the prospect of getting knifed by an assailant, might take out his own knife and slice himself before any damage could be incurred by the other party. "Yellow" is the longest story in the book and the most satisfying.
I found "The Price of Eggs in China" to be the most fun story, full of lovely twists and great detail about the making of furniture. "Casual Water" was the most heartbreaking, a sad story about two boys abandoned by both parents. Really, there isn't a weak story in this entire book. It's unfortunate that Yellow probably won't get past the typical Asian-American reader, because this book is quite universal in many respects, much like Jhumpa Lahiri's Interpreter of Maladies.
Oh well. Maybe not every Joe and Jane Doe will read it, but here's one reader who's a much happier person for having read this wonderful collection.

At Last

Finally an Asian American work that avoids cliches and writes about such things as Asian American men and Asian Hottie fetish mixed with racism and sexual politics to boot--and all with real intelligence. Lee pins everyone to the wall--men and women--explores their issues, their sexuality, their prejudices, and their hang-ups in a subtle, but engaging and realistic way. The prose is top-rate, Lee is a masterful storyteller on par with some of the best fiction writers out there. The stories "Casual Water" and the eponymous "Yellow" are poignant, well-written stnadouts; but check out "Domo Arigato," the story of a Korean American male and his white lover in Japan, and you get the feeling of Finally! Really great writing that has finally broken past the cliched Asian American streotypes of the past!
