Beginning, appropriately enough, on New Year's Day with a divine luncheon in a quaint restaurant, Mayle sets the scene and pits his British sensibilities against it. "We had talked about it during the long gray winters and the damp green summers," he writes, "looked with an addict's longing at photographs of village markets and vineyards, dreamed of being woken up by the sun slanting through the bedroom window." Like vacationing in the South of France . . .

When I was a sophomore in college, I spent a semester in Aix-en-Provence, France. While I was there I discovered that many of my fellow classmates had read "A Year in Provence" and were captivated by Mayle's account. Once I returned to the US, my parents bought it for me and I devoured it quickly. I loved this book -- and since I spent some time in Provence, I could relate to the various characters and adventures that Mr. Mayle writes about. His talent is definitely in the writing -- you certainly feel as if you are in Provence with him, searching out truffles or lamenting over his stone dining room table. I read this book (as well as its sequel, "Toujours Provence") over and over again, whenever I want to reminisce about the four months I spent abroad, or just for a few quick laughs. It truly is like taking a vacation, and taking a peek into Peter Mayle's charming quaint Provencal life. I highly recommend this book to anyone . . . and I promise that you will want to visit the South of France immediately!

Read it and see for yourself!

A French national, 4th generation "provençale" (from Provence), I couldn't help being both surprised and annoyed by the controversy around Peter Mayle's book. I loved his work and so did my whole family, still living in Provence. We found it refreshing to see our little world seen through a British eye, and got a real kick out of all the anecdotes. My (American) husband along with his parents read the book as well before discovering Provence and my family for the first time and enjoyed it tremendously.My advice to you, potential reader: do not pay attention to negative comments about this book. Read it and make your OWN opinion. You may love it or not.And if you end up touring in Provence, you're in for an unforgettable experience, especially if you avoid Summer months (Anyway the light in September is THE best), and if you get to know locals. This is better than any guide book. it is Provence from within... Enjoy!

a Charming Divertissement

I generally abhor travelogues, but this defies the genre and isn't really a travelogue per-se anyway. It describes a destination rather than a journey. Mayle and his wife arrive in Provence with full expectations of living la dolce vita and end up embroiled in a series of catastrophes that require them to reshape their entire characters and perform some serious attitude-adjusting. The English, like their American cousins, are accustomed to time and labor operating at peak efficiency. When someone tells us a job will be done in two weeks, we expect it done in 10 days. When we listen to weather reports, we want to know how long a particular pattern will last. We don't want to be told, "Maybe two days, maybe two weeks, maybe two months." As Mayle reports, things are done a bit differently in Provence. Time operates in a different dimension. If time is even considered, it is contemplated in terms of seasons, rather than hours, days, or weeks.
Mayle's (and his wife's) adaptation to the Provencal lifestyle is sometimes painful, other times poignant and telling, but almost always extremely funny. He is a born raconteur, a master of the amusing anecdote, expert at rendering a farcical tableau.
The cast of characters of A Year in Provence are priceless. He describes them vividly and each lends color to the overall impression of les Provencals that we eventually come away with. Mayle pokes gentle fun at them and obviously has warm feelings towards them, even his fox-eating neighbor, Massot. Every inhabitant of the region has a strong opinion on a variety of subjects, and these opinions are often at odds with those of their neighbors. About the only thing everyone agrees on is the importance of food. Mayle's decsriptions of his gastronomical forays are rendered so vividly that I have started combing the supermarket here in Pinehurst for ingredients (pale imitations for the most part, sadly).
I was fortunate to find the unabridged tape of this book at my library. David Case did a great job at rendering the English disposition slowly succombing to the pace and timbre of Provencal life. Mayle is great company. I look forward to hearing more from him.

About the Author
Michelle Blesi is a certified medical assistant CMA (AAMA) with 14 years of industry experience. She worked in the family practice area for 10 years, emphasizing clinical and laboratory skills, before changing her focus to leadership and working as a lead in the nursing/lab department and as a clinical manager. Michelle has a diploma in medical assisting (and is certified through the AAMA), a bachelor's degree in psychology, and a master's degree in community psychology, and she completed the Teacher Education Series (TES) courses in spring 2005 at the University of Minnesota. Her coursework included introduction to vocational teaching, course development, instructional methods, philosophy, and student training and assessment. A program director and unlimited full-time faculty member in the medical assistant department at Century College since 2001, Michelle enjoys bringing her career experience into the classroom and making a difference in students' lives. In addition to being program director, she teaches both clinical and laboratory courses, a medical assistant refresher course through CECT, and administrative procedures for medical assistants (both traditional and online). She is also the practicum coordinator and oversees clinical externships for the program. In addition to being the lead author for both the Seventh and Eighth Editions of MEDICAL ASSISTING: ADMINISTRATIVE AND CLINICAL COMPETENCIES, Michelle has contributed to many other Cengage projects, including being the SME for Critical Thinking Challenge 3.0, and completing multiple reviewer projects and test bank completions. Among her many accomplishments are the Board of Trustees Outstanding Educator Award (2012), Golden Apple Award (2010), and Exemplary Faculty Member (2007).

Barbara A. Wise, MA (Ed.), BSN, RN, worked in physicians' offices and as a health care educator for more than twenty-six years. Previously a State Supervisor of vocational education for the State of Ohio, she received an M.A. in Education, with a major concentration on curriculum construction and a minor in health education.

Cathy Kelley-Arney works in the clinical laboratory of an inpatient medical facility. She has worked for many years in both inpatient and outpatient settings as a lab technician and medical assistant, and in the educational setting as an instructor, program director, and institutional director of health care education.

Medical Assisting Administrative & Clinical Competencies

This textbook is laid out in an easy to follow format and the information for the most part is up to date and informative. My 3 star rating comes from the grammatical errors, and errors/differences between the workbook and the manual. I will sometimes catch myself wondering if I can trust the information to be correct. Several students in my class have pointed out discrepancies in the book i.e. diagrams labels wrong. I would just think that a textbook would have had better proofing for less errors.

My son needed this text book for his medical assisting program. He is a seventeen years old the book is for college level reading. It was hard at first but now that the school year is half way done he is doing very well he has almost a ninety average. Urban Lifetime Movie

Just finished reading this book & all I can say is wow! This author went through hell and back,but she never gave up. She was abused mentally, physically and emotionally. I like how she showed the good the bad and the ugly in her situation. I think that's what made her story believable and relatable, the fact that she didn't "sugarcoat " or try to make herself look like an "innocent Angel" She kept it 100! I think this book will help someone who is in an abusive relationship to "wake up " the fact that the author was able to look back and admit & identify her mistakes shows that she has learned from her experience. No matter how bad your situation is, if you learn from it then it was helpful in making you a better person.

I am not a big reader and it normally takes me a long time to read a book but this book was so interesting that I couldn't put it down from the first page to the last page it kept me intrigued and wanted to know more about the person who went through this tragic period in their life. I feel that this is a must-read for young girls today. It needs to be on every highschool bookshelf in school libraries throughout Kansas City. I feel that this writer is an excellent writer and she told her story very well it was an easy book to read I understood everything that was written and everything that she was going through I understood the timeline the content of the story,great job. I hope other people read this book and I hope that they get the message that the writer was trying to put out there and I also hope that it becomes a play and hit the Big Time movie theaters cuz I would be one movie that I would love to go see

This was a great book. Very talented writer. I found this book to be very intiguing. It hits so close to home for some. And so many are able to relate. I absolutely loved the strength and endurance of the writer. She is certainly a survivor. And I commend her for her ability to continue to fight, not just physically. But, Emotionally , mentally and spiritually. You my dear, are an inspiration to many. Amazing book!

Sex, Drugs, Violence, Science (Spoiler Free Review)

PLOT- In short this is a science fiction piece about the fate of mankind that has built an underwater city to escape the sun's expanding supernova.

ACTION/PACING- Lots of action, fighting and it kept the pace going strong. You will want to read this in one sitting. I tried to, but was pulled away by other engagements. LOW earns it's M rating for tons of fighting, gore, sex, and drug use that you will want more and more of. Orgies, psychedelics, and dismemberment? (not all in one scene, that'd be gross) What else do you need?

STORY- This is a volume 1 and much of the beginning is getting the reader introduced to the word and to the characters. Once we get a bearing of the story, it moves along rapidly and keeps the reader engaged. The word that is created surrounds everything and is something I love about Remender. If you love interesting worlds and creatures, you will like this. In fact, if you liked Black Science, just stop reading now and go get this. I liked Black Science more, but they had a more fun concept to play with.

ART- I loved the art of this book and I know some people haven't so here we go. A common complaint I've seen is that the art work is "blurred" or "sketchy" (as in art, not dubious) and at times, it is. The artwork is still gorgeous and to be honest I spent more time admiring it than I do most modern comics. For a comic about the dark depths of the ocean/sea this works very well in my opinion. As the depths of the sea still remain a mystery it feels right to have it drawn as such. Does every image need to be drawn with clean crisp outlines to get the message across? For scenes like explosions, orgies, and the ocean floor, I don't think so. It works to get the point in the eyes/mind of the reader and sets the mood in doing so.

Don't judge this based upon its art style, it works for the genre and setting of this story. Sin City is heavily stylized in black/white because it is noir. Eddie Campbell's sketch-y rendition of From Hell adds to the bleak and dreariness of London during the Jack the Ripper killings. Charles Schulz's simplicity and expression add to the charm of Peanuts. The art of Greg Tocchini is not strictly modern comic book style art, at least not in LOW. /rant [sorry]

RECOMMEND IF YOU LIKE- Black Science and Deadly Class- Hey, it's Rick Remender. Also Pacific since its all... water-y.

TL;DR- good action, not modern comic book style [but still great], interesting and enveloping world, if you liked Black Science, get this.

Unrealized ambition (3.5 stars)

For quite a long time, humans have lived in domed underwater cities to escape the radiation of a sun gone supernova. Probes sent to discover a new habitable planet have so far found zilch. For generations, the hunters of Salus have left their city in a whale-shaped submarine to go hunting for squid and mammoths and other yummy seafood, but they are apparently at war with folks who live outside the city walls.

Cut to: a cop named Marik who likes to get high on a drug called "cream" and have fantasy sex with a hooker. Ten years have passed since his sisters disappeared, apparently captured by one of the bad folks who live somewhere else. Marik's mother is the only human in Salus who still has hope. The city is doomed, the air is becoming toxic, and it is only a matter of months before everyone dies (although most of them plan to die in a drug-fueled orgy, which seems like a good plan). Unless, of course, a nick-of-time probe returns bearing news of a habitable world.

Eventually the mother and son go on a quest, finding humans who are even more degenerate than those they left behind. If you're into bizarre orgies with mutated fish creatures (and who isn't?), this is the graphic novel for you.

Hope versus despair is the theme of volume 1 (when you're really low, "there's only room to rise"). Low tells a decent story although it takes some time for the plot to develop. The art is a little strange -- it looks like it may have been drawn by someone who took mescaline, giving meaning to the "delirium" in the subtitle -- but it grew on me. I particularly like the coloring. There's a lot happening here and I give the creators points for being ambitious, but the ambition isn't realized with a coherent, compelling story. Volume 1 makes me interested in reading volume 2, but it doesn't leave me aching for more. I'm giving Low a weak 4 stars that is probably closer to 3 1/2.

Beautiful, hope filled, and enthralling

This is a gorgeous and weird read that might not be for everyone. Hidden amongst the fiery colors and wild, sometimes surreal art, is a story that's centered around hope and perseverance. I don't think I've ever come across a comic that is as imaginative nor one whose narrative strives for optimism. Typically mature story telling leans on pessimism and doom-and-gloom to drive their characters forward, but here, it's the inner strength and belief in hope. I haven't read a story that has so explicitly or on-the-nose been about being optimistic despite seeming like the world is against you, and it's refreshing to be in the head space of a character that's so nurturing and self confident.

For me, this is one of the most uplifting and motivating reads I have ever come across, and I can't wait to see what happens next. Highly, highly recommend for anyone who wants to read something different or needs an pick-me-up
