Enlightenment for Over-Programmed Christians

This is a wonderful old book filled with profound observations about Western man's relationship with God. Written by a post-Victorian intellectual mystic, who happened to be a production designer by trade, this book recounts the author's salvation from near-suicidal depression via a personal mystical experience. The insights gained through that experience inspired this book, which attacks the stagnant relationship modern Christians share with God. He exhorts the reader to open up to a richer and more meaningful interpretation of Christ's teachings, relying more on his recorded words and less on the intercession of stilted preachers who have lost all connection with his original teachings in favor of their myopic cultural programming. At their best, King's words attain the power of elegant, inspirational poetry. At their worst, they retain a few scant traces of Western cultural chauvinism, although it seems likely this pose was adopted to appeal to his intended target. If you're looking for accessibly written clues to life, this is worth a look. Stay with it to the end, it gets deeper and more impressive as it goes on. And don't be put off if you're agnostic -- King is as much an evolutionist as he is a true believer.

I never buy these kinds of books. I have always viewed them as a type of preying on believers or , at best, a sleazy attempt to cash in on faith. This book was different. I read the title and synopsis and passed over it many times but something kept drawing me back to this book. I didn't know why at the time, but I had to buy this book.

I loved it from the very first page. It has a ring of truth. Most of the book is about what happened to Mr. Piper after his experience in heaven and during his long, painful recovery. I bought many copies and gave them to family and friends, urging them to read it as I believe it has the power to transform lives.

About a month after I 1st read this book my son was killed in Iraq. I now know that God was preparing me for what was to come and not be afraid but be joyful that my son is with Him in an indescribly beautiful place, in His presence. I have a peace of mind I NEVER would have known if I had not read this book. I will be forever grateful for this.

I couldn't put it down!

Written in straight-forward, simple style without a lot of "religionese," Don Piper has told the story of his devastating accident, his brief time in heaven and his return to a life full of pain and questions. I read it cover-to-cover in two hours and then loaned out my copy. I would recommend this book to just about anybody -- to those with questions about faith, questions about prayer, questions about life and death and pain which we all face to some extent.

His descriptions of heaven are human ones -- simple, not overly poetic or grandiose, just those of someone who experienced the indescribable and then tried to describe it. I loved the descriptions of the incredible heavenly music and I get the feeling that vast choirs and heightened senses await us there. And despite the incredible experience, Piper found it too personal, too private, and too intimate to share with anyone for over a year after his accident. I'm so glad he found the courage to do so.

I also love the honesty with which he describes his pain and depression and the inevitable questions that we must face when we have close encounters with the Almighty. The God we meet is often not the one we expected, and while we can't understand why God does what he does, we can no longer deny this God we don't understand. And while we hold these two things together, our lives are changed and grace is showered down amid the ruins of what we thought was important to us.

A simply-told story of the greatest mystery of all -- you HAVE to read this book!!

Just enough to make it real

As I glanced through other reviews of this book, I noticed many of the negative reviews voiced the same issue -- "there wasn't enough about his experience in Heaven". But that's what confirmed its authenticity to me along with his self-admitted inability to describe it. I'm confident Reverand Piper conveyed exactly what he experienced and that it wasn't embellished or enhanced merely to satisfy our earthly desires for more information. A lesser author would have done so to sell more books! His experience in Heaven was the most intriguing part of the book, but of greater value was what he did with that experience as well as the mental and physical challenges following his accident. In summary, it's a confirmation of God's promises to us regarding Heaven, a reminder that we all serve a purpose for Him while on earth, and a prompting regarding our responsibility to ensure others are saved.

The book presents the CISA certification material in a reasonable ...

The book presents the CISA certification material in a reasonable manner, but suffers from the following limitations:
A. Sample questions are out of date.
B. The technical world has changed a lot, but the book does not provide a cross-reference on the subject.
C. Detailed explanation is missing for the following concepts: risk analysis, risk assessment and risk evolution.
In addition, the book didn’t design for beginners. The reader should have a basic understanding in Internal Audit, Regulations and Law requirements. This isn’t a limitation from my point of view, due the CISA certification experience requirements.

mom with spunky baby meets boy with attitude ...

Kara is a single mother to Nadia – a sweet and feisty 18 month old toddler who keeps her mom on her toes. After a series of largely unfortunate events brings handsome PD (you’ll learn what it means when you read the book) paramedic Reid into Kara’s life, Kara doubts her ability to be a good mother, knows Reid strongly disapproves of her, and in general wonders about the course of her life. Kara is frantically busy at work, but earns a good living, allowing her and Nadia to live comfortably. She is also ever mindful of Nadia’s father, Steve, who dumped Kara after learning she was pregnant and probably still doesn’t even know he has a daughter.

Reid has some unfortunate and painful history of his own, causing him to put up a wall between himself and anyone with any ability to get close – and that goes doubly so for anyone with a sweet little girl.

Throughout the book, the reader feels the ups and downs of Kara and Reid’s lives as individuals and when together, especially when Nadia's father re-enters the picture. Even though I did not agree with some of the child raising attitudes expressed by characters in the book, overall I did not feel that it significantly detracted from the basic story, which I loved. I had not read the prior book in the series by the same author that was about Kara’s sister, but I do intend to. This is a stand-alone book that I easily understood and related to, although I would guess it would feel richer and be even more engaging had I been familiar with the characters and their earlier stories. In summary, I do recommend this book as an engaging, entertaining, and reasonably quick and easy read, although there are a few inconsistencies in the storyline and wording. As I have an ARC, it is not clear to me whether these will be corrected before the final version is released. Even with the few problems, I would still recommend as it is a story that I would not have wanted to miss.

I loved this story

I had so much fun with this book. I smiled, I laughed and just really enjoyed reading "His Touch" the first in the Summer in New York Series. Patty Blout just made this such an easy and lovely read that I am looking forward to His Kiss and His Love and really hope that the authors that wrote them make me fall in love with their characters too.

I love reading quick, summer reads especially when the the leading man happens to be a hot paramedic with FDNY. **swoon** Mix that with his scruffy attitude and precious little girl and you have me hooked. And, believe me, Reid was one hot male. He may have had some hardships and wore them on his sleeve but, he turned out to be just was the doctor ordered for Kara.

Kara was a strong-willed, loving women. Even though she had a hard past, she stood up on her own two feet and made a life for her and her daughter. She may have had some "woe-is-me" times but they were well deserved. Enter Reid and her life becomes totally complicated. Then bring in the ex with some horrifying news and Reid becomes her rock.

Together, they save each other. Kara makes Reid take a good look at his life and face the past and his grief. Reid lets Kara know that she doesn't have to go through life alone.

I loved this story. Patty Blount made you feel for both of the main characters in the book and she surrounded them with loving, fun friends that would do anything for the other, especially in times of need. She moved the story along and didn't drag out anything that would have had you wondering when she was going to get to the point. Reid was handsome, strong and vulnerable. Kara was loving, caring and fragile. Put them together and you had an HEA that was touching and beautiful.

An enjoyable romantic read...

If you are looking for a short but sweet, well-written, heart touching romantic tale, you might want to consider His Touch (Book 1 of Summer in New York series) by Patty Blount. Handsome NYFD paramedic, Reid Bennett, is used to rushing in and saving lives. However, it is his heart that ultimately gets rescued by single mom, Kara Larsen, and her toddler, Nadia. Reid has never gotten over the tragic death of his little girl, Erin, when he keeps running into Kara. Nadia reminds him so much of his loss, in his anguish, he is always seems to be lashing out at Kara. With a backdrop of memories of loved ones lost on 9/11, a great cast of believable secondary characters, this emotion packed story unfolds with angst-filled twists and turns. If my research is correct, “The Christmas in New York” series is based on the love stories of Nadia’s friends and sister. This reviewer would definitely like to read all the books in both series. Please note each book appears to have a different author.
