Hawaii and Crime Done Right

It's not easy to write a story that takes place in Hawaii for a wider audience and do it well. Many authors write from an outsider's perspective, throwing out careless mistakes which cause local readers to groan in the same way they suffer the mispronunciation of famous street names or landmarks on Hawaii Five-O. Other writers spend so much time explaining why Hawaii is the way it is, they lose the rhythm of the narrative and distract from the story they are trying to tell. Another common trap is to use local expressions without bothering to explain what they mean.

The late Ian MacMillan could strike the right balance, and Toby Neal can, too. The main character in Blood Orchids--Lei Texeira--grew up partly in Hawaii, partly in California. Having Lei for a main character is like having a cultural interpreter to show you what it's really like to live in Hilo, on the island of Hawaii. The authenticity is there, the local flavor and texture are there, too. But the contemporary social issues are in the background. This story is about a very human and likeable cop with more than a couple of things to prove. Her friends, family, enemies, and the things that happen to her and around her make this a compelling read.

I found Blood Orchids to be a captivating story with engaging characters in well described settings. If, like me, you are a fan of crime/mystery novels with a series character, then you will want to add Toby Neal's Lei Texeira to your list. I look forward to reading more about the exploits of this feisty and complex Hilo, Hawaii cop.

Easy to follow and thorough explanations

Truly one of the best lab manuals I have ever used! It thoroughly explained procedures and provided relative information to be applied in student research experiments. I used it when I was teaching assistant to the lab section and it helped me be prepared for student questions, and organize their curriculum in a logical manner, such that material learned in lecture was applied in lab.

Great book!!

I purchased this book to help my 7 year old son write a heritage report and it was exactly what he needed! A little boy named Marco gives all kinds of useful information and explains it in a way that is very easy for children to understand. Brazil's history, geography, carnival, soccer, schooling, it talks about it all and didn't even bother trying to look elsewhere to help gather information. Wonderful book!!

Very well written and a true gem in kids books about Brazil.

As a Brazilian native, this is a nice way to teach your own kids and a nice token for my kid's friends about my country. I wish I had found this book for my son's birthday so I could give them away in his favor bags. Looking forward to the following books about China and Mexico. I'm definitely purchasing the "Living in... Italy" as well.

I'm sure the author researched quite well (and maybe had some consulting help) to write so nicely this little book.

I got this as a gift for my friend who's Brazilian, came to America, married and had kids with an American man. She was thrilled with this gift so she can show her children more about Brazil in a fun way. She couldn't believe I was able to find something like this. Definitely recommend for any Brazilians with children who are a bit unaware of the culture when you tell them stories.

A lifetime resource as well as a great introduction

I'm surprised I've studied Anthropology this long without this book. It is simple, linear and effective. David Fetterman takes the beginner through all the necessary thought processes and equipment required to do research. More importantly, he includes a whole section of resource material in one book. Everything from Web sites with research data to List Serves that have anthropological material to associations, their phone numbers, email addresses and Web sites. He includes a detailed listing of software and freeware that can help a reseacher, complete with a brief explanation of the use and value.
Moreover, he noted that when the first edition came out in 1989, there was no World Wide Web, so that by the time this book was published in 1998, it was undoubtedly already out of date. Subsequently, he has set up a Web page to accompany the text with a more up-to-date listing of software, freeware, List Serves, technological advances and WebSites.
This book is a great tool!
Fetterman gives user friendly definitions of many of the most daunting terms in the field of anthropology.
Emic = insider's or native's perspective. Etic = external or social science perspective. Proxemitics = study of how the socially defined physical distance between people varies in differing social circumstances. Kinesics = body language study. Operationalism = defining one's terms and methods of measurement. Terms like micro and macro level studies, open and closed probes, structural and attribute questions are not only defined, but are put into practice with short examples.
Fetterman briefly describes research methods such as projection techniques and triangulation -- gives examples of their use, advantages and drawbacks.
He details specific uses for specific programs, like MicNotePad that turns the researchers portable computer into a tape recorder and aids in transcribing the material.
This book is an essential tool for any student, undergrad, graduate or post graduate in anthropology or social sciences in general.

A "How To" Guide

Fetterman explains in sequential fashion how to do an ethnographic study. He describes ethnography as "the art and science of describing a group or culture" (p. 11) The first step in the process is for the researcher to enter the field of study with an open mind. In attempting to describe a setting, there is no one acceptable standard. Multiple interpretations of reality exist. A study is one person's view of a given group, at a particular time. Although this limitation is a given, an ethnographer should seek to be holistic in presenting a study's findings (p. 21). An ethnographic study would include both structure and function. Structure is the social structure or configuration of the group. Function is the social relations among group members. Like systems theory, relationships are significant components of an ethnographic study. Symobolic communication is significant in revealing what is important to the people being studied. As an observer, a researcher using this approach is a human instrument. There are some biases, but the more experience one develops, the better one can develop his or her skills of observation. Fetterman goes on to talk about the difference between writing good field notes and writing the final report. In all the book clearly shows how to go about the process of doing an ethnographic study.

Poorly designed book and outdated material for a big price.

Tiny book. Big price. The fact that you are paying $40 for a book that explains what a PDA is and talks about how to use the internet is just wrong. Yes, there are good chunks of information in the book about what ethnography is and how to approach it, but for the price this is not enough. Maybe 10 years ago this would have been work $40. Not anymore. Also, the book itself uses cheap paper stock, renders grainy black and white images, and holds little value with its cheap binding. At $12 – $15 I may have given this book four stars.

Hard to give this book enough stars!

Having just visited Rome and Athens I wanted a book that explained some of what I had seen and also showed what are now ruins as they looked in antiquity. This book does that and a great deal more. From cutaway views to recreations and more important discussion of events and the history of each of these cities it is a valuable resource to which I have turned more than a few times. If you have been or are going to Athens and/or Rome this would be a wonderful book to study before you go, take with you (if room) and to enjoy on your return. If you are just interested in these cities in antiquity this book will not disappoint. If there were 6 stars I would give it to this book!

Peter Connolly's art work is good just in itself that I could buy a book on his illustrations and reconstructions alone this book will make Ancient Greece and Rome come to life far more exciting then just reading another book on this topic when reading the information and seeing the illustrations gives you a far better idea of what life was like back then

In Eastern philosophy, spirit is known as Qi or chi, which is life force energy. The yin/yang symbol is the visual representation of Qi, which is the blending of heaven and Earth, male and female, fire and water, aggression and passivity, giving and receiving. One Yang and one Yin are called "Tao", which means "the way". Taoism is an ancient philosophy created by Lao Tse that teaches awareness of natural cosmic cycles and the blending of Yin and Yang, which results in balanced, harmonious living.

Applied to Chinese Astrology, Qi is the marriage of divine spirit with human personality. Each of the 12 animal archetypes is a mixture of positive and negative attributes. Positive traits such as loyalty, forgiveness, perseverance, and compassion reflect the alignment of personality with spirit (Qi). Negative traits such as bitterness, anger, jealousy, and possessiveness reflect a great separation between human personality and spiritual essence. At the beginning of the book, Wu provides several pages of charts, so you can find your animal sign and element in a matter of seconds.

Each animal is profiled in a unique chart, highlighting lucky color, fragrance, flavor, flower, gem, Feng Shui direction, lucky number, symbolism, and more. Wu then goes on to explain each sign's essential temperament, duality (negative traits), gifts, and capabilities-as well as a "who's who" of the famous (and infamous!). She also explains how each sign manifests during childhood, as well as in home, hearth, and career. A separate profile of the male and female expression of the archetype is included.

Another crucial aspect to Chinese Astrology is the five elements. According to the book, each of the animal signs are considered an "Earthly Branch", and repeat every 12 years in the Chinese Zodiac. However, the "Heavenly Stems", or the five elements, occur once every 60 years. The five elements, which bring balance, are Wood (growth), Fire (leadership), Earth (stability), Metal (structure, and Water (feelings). Wu states that everything in the universe, including humans, has a relationship with these five elements and explains the fascinating doctrine of the Five Elements:

Wood produces Fire.
Fire created Earth.
Earth supports Metal.
Metal compliments Water.
Water assists Wood.

Fire destroys Metal.
Metal is hostile to Wood.
Wood fights Earth.
Earth conflicts with Water.
Water extinguishes Fire.

The first principle reflects how the five elements produce, enable, support and assist one another, while the second principle explains how they destroy, control, destabilize and fight one another.

Wu gives a fascinating explanation of the developmental stages of the five elements, how they manifest in personality, and how these elements mesh with the 12 animal signs. For example, a Wood Tiger is not as impetuous as other Tigers, tending to look before they leap. A Wood Rooster, on the other hand, is more thoughtful and tactful than other Rooster-element combinations.

One of my favorite parts of this engaging 256 book is the Birth Time Companion. This "other you" is represents the hour that you were born, and further shades your animal sign. This "companion", akin to the Ascendant of Western Astrology, reveals hidden spiritual possibilities, represents your shadow self, and advises you throughout life. For example, I'm a Metal Dog and my Birth Time Companion is the Monkey. The Monkey, according to Wu, is the consummate salesman gifted with the powers of persuasion, wit, enthusiasm, and eternal youthfulness. Irrepressible, Monkeys usually have a card up their sleeve, impart a delicious sense of humor to each sign, and provides an aptitude for entrepreneurial enterprises. Added to the in-depth information of the animal signs and elements, the Birth Time Companion rounds out a detailed holographic picture of the 12 archetypal patterns found among humans.

In the context of relationships, Wu discusses compatibility and attraction. For example, why do instant attractions exist? What is behind the urge to be close to one person and not another? She explains this chemistry (or lack thereof) with a model of four Triangles of Compatibility, known as Trines. Both love signs and karmic connections are addressed, with an analysis of each pairing. Wu doesn't skimp on the relationship profiles. For example, she highlights each love sign individually and how they pair with other signs. So while she provides a snapshot of Dog-Pig under "The Dog and Love", she gives a different snapshot (with a similar theme) under "The Pig and Love" for the Pig-Dog pairing. (Incidentally, Wu is a Dog paired with a Pig, which is a neat coincidence since I'm a Metal Dog paired with a Metal Pig. I laughed at a portion of her Acknowledgments which thanked her long-suffering husband by saying: "Why can't all men be Pigs?")

Chinese Astrology - Exploring the Eastern Zodiac provides a wealth of information on the Eastern Zodiac and the archetypal temperaments of the 12 animal signs. Anyone interested in exploring this fascinating branch of Eastern philosophy will be richly rewarded by this insightful book by Shelly Wu. The author's keen observation-a hallmark of those born in the year of the Dog-uncovers the mysteries and motivations that underlie personality. You may never look at yourself, or others, the same way again.

A Must Have!

This book is a lot of fun to read and is very insightful. I've already had to buy an extra copy because my friends keep borrowing it. One of the most interesting points for me was Chinese astrology's deep ties to eastern philosophy. I also really enjoyed the artwork at the beginning of each sign chapter (check-out the Dragon on page #69 and the Monkey on page #117). This is an entertaining and interesting book that clearly illuminated the subject for me. I laughed out loud at her description of the Rat man turning his "irked wife's kitchen" into a mad-professors laboratory. Wow, does that shoe ever fit...You rock Shelly!!!

Great book

I would recommend this book to anyone truely interested in learning about themselves or others in regards to chinese astrology.It covers a lot of information and gives good insite to your animal and natural element and how they can be used to enhance your life.It compares each sign with other signs in positive and negative areas.I am sure there are other good books out there on this subject but this is one I keep on my desk and study.It has helped me understand myself and that knowledge has enriched my life by approaching life in a new way.
