A visual learners dream!

Huge fan of the incredibly easy series. It got me through nursing school 8 years ago and still aids me in brushing up and test prep. I'm a visual learner and the silly cartoons really help me retain the content of the section. I'm studying for my CCRN and this is a huge help. I really like the new addition and the color pages are great! Highly recommend as a quick refresh for the visual learner!

Against such views, philosopher David H. Lund advances a nonmaterialist and nonreductionist interpretation of the self in this rigorously argued work in the philosophy of mind. Using both analytic and phenomenological approaches, Lund meets well-known materialist and reductionist theories of the self head on, providing a comprehensive set of arguments against such theories. Arguing that the conscious self must be accorded the ontological status of a "metaphysically basic particular," he first establishes that the unity of consciousness experienced at the present moment reveals the presence of a unitary subject of conscious states. He then shows that the unity of consciousness that extends over time (revealed in the sense of having remained the same person over time despite numerous changes) can be plausibly explained only if the selfsame unitary subject endures through time. Finally, he demonstrates that the subject of conscious states (the conscious self) has modal properties (those reflecting the conditions under which the conscious self might have existed) that no purely material entity could possess.

This thorough, erudite, and highly original defense of dualism as a serious philosophical account of consciousness will be of interest to philosophers, cognitive scientists, and anyone with an interest in the perennial riddle of consciousness.

The Conscious Self

This is a great defense of Cartesian dualism! David Lund works through philosophy of mind, metaphysics of persons and philosophy of personal identity when mounting a defense for Cartesian dualism. This is the most thorough use of the phenomenological argument for Cartesian dualism that I have ever seen. It is a sure refutation of materialist renderings of personhood. Two other distinctives of Lund's work include his unique and interesting development of the modal argument for the immaterial self and his development of causation and agency that flow from his Cartesian dualism. This is a tightly developed argument that conclusively argues in favor of an enduring simple immaterial self.

The best and most helpful single-volume edition

Students and various e-mail correspondents often ask me which single-volume Shakespeare edition I would recommend, and I never hesitate in naming this one, as I think it has a long lead over its rivals. I have myself used the 1992 printing with amazing frequency both in research and in teaching, and always with advantage.
Why is this the best edition for a reader who wants as much as possible within the confines of a single book? First, it should be pointed out that unannotated editions such as the Oxford Complete Works are all in all of comparatively little use as even expert Renaissance scholars - leave alone inexpert readers - cannot read Shakespeare's language unaided; there are simply far too many words, features of grammar, etc., which a modern reader is certain to interpret inaccurately or not to understand at all. So it is essential to have intelligent and well-informed annotation that will help one to understand the text. Bevington's is extraordinarily good: knowledgeable, precise, and helpfully clear.
Second, an editor needs to be able to produce a responsible modernised text. Shakespeare cannot be understood by many unless he is read in modern spelling, and the punctuation of his period, too, often leads most modern readers astray. Bevington's modernisation of the text is exemplary. Furthermore, his handling of the many thorny textual problems is also outstanding for the knowledge and the judgement that he brings to bear. For example, the Oxford people unwisely and on poor grounds print two separate versions of *King Lear*, and Bevington has been exceptional in rejecting that approach and producing a persuasively and intelligibly "conflated" text (much better, by the way, than the conflated version in the Arden text edited in 1997 by R.A. Foakes).
Most readers of the plays who are not already quite familar with them will want good, perceptive and comprehensive introductions to them, and in this area, too, Bevington excels, demonstrating an awareness of modern approaches and interests without falling victim to trendiness. He offers introductions which are never dull but, however exciting and illuminating, always sensible.
The general introductory and accompanying material made available elsewhere in the book is equally useful, revealing, and accurate; and the book is well produced. It is amazingly cheap for the remarkable value it offers.
This, then, is not only the best single-volume Shakespeare available, but is by any standard as good an edition as anyone could possibly expect. I add that in my personal view Bevington is probably the only scholar at present alive who could have produced so excellent a single-volume edition. Unreservedly recommended. NOTE: this is a specific review of the FOURTH edition, which to my mind is by far the best, and the only one which I unhesitatingly recommend.

The death knell for eclectic texts

Perhaps, like me, you have held on to the Complete Works of William Shakespeare you've had since college and are wondering if the world really needs yet another edition of the Bard's complete output. Well, the Modern Library edition of the Royal Shakespeare Company's Shakespeare has a lot to recommend it. The text is beautifully set in single column format, making it easier for actors and those who wish to read the text aloud to scan the poetic lines and to distinguish between poetry and prose. Jonathan Bates's General Introduction is comprehensive, engaging, and lively. As with the introductions to the individual plays, Bates gives special attention to the performance traditions from which these plays emerged as well as those which would shape their interpretation over the centuries. This concern for performance issues is also addressed in the "Key Facts" boxes that follow every play introduction. Here the editors summarize the plot, identify the major parts (with percentage of lines and number of speeches assigned to each character, etc.), take a stab at identifying a dates of composition and first performance, and discuss the plays' sources and state of the texts available. There are ample, but not an overwhelming number of footnotes. And these notes, Bates assures us, do not shy away from discussion of Shakespeare's bawdier puns (something that may not be true of your old college textbook). Another real plus is the inclusion of a fragmentary scene from "Sir Thomas More" based on the only manuscript known to be in Shakespeare's own hand.

But the best reason to buy the RSC Shakespeare is because the editors have gone to great lengths to preserve the First Folio (1623) edition of Shakespeare. They have modernized the spelling and punctuation and have read (and corrected) the text against Quarto texts where these exist, but have not recklessly blended Quarto and Folio texts, something most previous editors have done with impunity for generations. The editors make a strong case for the Folio texts being the best versions available and respecting their "purity" makes it possible for readers and those preparing new stagings to grapple with textual variants in a thoughtful and respectful manner. It seems that Shakespearean textual critical work is finally taking on the discipline of biblical criticism. Let's hope the results will be equally illuminating and revolutionary.

A brilliantly simple idea

The idea behind this edition is brilliantly simple: produce a modern edition of the First Folio. The editors do not attempt to produce a "definitive" text of Shakespeare. Their goal is more modest: to reconstruct, as closely as possible, the material that Heminges and Condell brought into the printing house in 1623. It is, they say, a snapshot of the playtexts at one stage in their evolution.

The various quarto and octavo editions are used to correct the Folio text (where that is obviously corrupt) but not to supplement it. Passages excised from the Folio are printed here in appendices and textual notes. Plays that didn't appear in the Folio appear in a different format in the back. (So too with the poems and sonnets.) If passages vary in wording between the early editions, the Folio receives precedence, as long as it makes sense.

The notes are also quite extensive about vocabulary and are franker than usual about sexual matters. The notes about historical events are not as extensive as those in the Riverside, but the chronologies, introductions, and other supplementary materials do provide the basic background. The introductions, by Jonathan Bate, are concise and steer a middle course between dramatic / thematic issues on one hand and developmental / textual issues on the other.

Like the Norton Shakespeare, the plays are here printed in single-column format, which greatly aids readability. Unlike the Norton, which prints the plays in approximate chronological order, the plays are printed here in the order they appeared in the First Folio. Highly recommended.

This novel touched me on so many different emotional and physical levels.The writing was beyond superb.

After reading It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover I was at wits end on how to review this book. There are just not the right kind of words to describe this reading experience without giving away spoilers. It's a novel that each reader needs to experience themselves. The only word I could use to accurately describe this novel is PROFOUND.

It Ends With Us is not the typical romance. I wouldn't even put this novel in the romance genre. It is more like a contemporary fiction novel or womens fiction novel.

I would suggest that readers stay away from social media and sites where spoilers and in depth reviews are posted . This type of influence could give the readers the wrong perceptions going in. I highly recommend going into this novel "blind", free of any influence from the outside world.

Colleen Hoover is a gifted writer that delivers a unique reading experience with every one of her novels. It Ends With Us has layers upon layers within the overall plot of the story. Each and everyone of her characters are multi dimensional. There are so many shades of gray within this novel. Colleen colors these shades of gray and gives the reader a completely different perspective. As this novel progresses, the colors change in value and tone, very much like a kaleidoscope . In the end the reader walks away with new perceptions, a deeper understanding of these life circumstances, and hopefully a more tolerable opinion.

Each character in this novel was shaped by their pasts. There were cracks in their entire being. They were both good and bad, loving and hateful, and lastly broken but not beyond salvation. They were who they were and had to choose how to proceed in their future lives. They all had to choose the path they wanted to take in their future that would illuminate rather than darken their lives.

This novel touched me on so many different emotional and physical levels. I walked away with a different perspective. In no way do I condone some of the issues but I will not be quick to judge people in these life situations.

The writing was beyond superb. It delivered a very profound message. It was a real portrayal of life, love, relationships, and family. It was enlightening. The overall message was positive.

It Ends With Us is so much more than I was expecting, and I have a pretty high bar set when it comes to Colleen Hoover. She has said this is her most personal work yet, and that’s pretty much the extent of what I knew before I started reading. I would recommend people go into this book with as little prior knowledge as possible. It really does mean more that way. I would go so far as to say this is Colleen Hoover’s most powerful book yet.

The journal entries from high school set up Lily’s first love. It is unexpected, sweet, everything young love entails. It also set the stage for Lily’s disenfranchisement with her parents. While Lily is reminiscing about her first love, she is also at the start of a new relationship, and this new one is equally as sweet.

When her first love and her new love collide, Lily has some decisions to make. Serious, life-altering choices.

I spent much of the book wanting to shake Lily. But that’s the natural, outsider’s reaction to parts of her situation. But listening to her narration, her reasoning, I found myself wavering just like she was. For the first time, I understood.

This was at times hard to read, and so emotional I had to pause to collect myself, but I did not want to put it down. It is full of hard truths, honest, beautiful, and harsh. I wish there was more to the ending, as it felt rushed. I wanted to see the happy at the end, but I also realize that this is as much Lily’s story as it is a love story, if not more so. Reading this as one woman’s journey, even the ending is perfect. It is less important where she ends up than it is that she gets there and how.

This was heartbreaking and poignant, uplifting and hopeful. I love how the circle closes, but love that not everything about the story is pretty.

I got the book from the library and I want it. There is too much good detail to remember. Can you talk them into publishing it on CD Rom? Or, can they at least print some more so I can buy it? It is a narrow subject that probably doesn't have enough readers, but it is good.

About the Author

Rice Broocks is the cofounder of the Every Nation family of churches, with more than one thousand churches in more than 73 nations. The senior minister of Bethel World Outreach Church, Nashville, Tennessee, Rice is also the author of several books, including God’s Not Dead, The Purple Book, and Every Nation in Our Generation. A graduate of Mississippi State University, Rice has a master’s degree from Reformed Theological Seminary and a doctorate of Missiology from Fuller Theological Seminary.

It's the workbook that uses your Bible as the textbook. It's based in the scriptures and requires the reader and the leader (it's meant to be done in pairs or with several others) to go to the word to get the answers. This generates discussion and no matter the depth, the reader gains insight into the word.

Do you have ten minutes a day to study your Bible? Do you want to know what is really "in there"? Do you want to know why you believe what you believe about sin, the power of prayer, spiritual gifts, spiritual hunger, discipleship, evangelism, death and resurrection? At the end of this study, you will have spent nine quality hours in your Bible and have built a strong foundation for your faith.

I have enjoyed this study tremendously. Each lesson is broken down into a short paragraph summarizing the topic, about ten questions that involve looking things up in the Bible and then an application question. You are asked how you will apply this lesson to your daily life.

While this book is geared toward Protestant topics (water baptism, prosperity, Baptism in the Holy Spirit), I found it just as challenging as a Catholic.

A must-do study. Don't put it off. It's worth it for new and old believers alike.

Good theory plus research book.

This textbook does a fair job of covering the signifigant aspects of Bio-Mechanics. It is interesting that the chapters cover some theory of the subject and some current research summaries. If you are looking for a text on just the "engineering/math" aspects, this book may have too many other topics included. But for someone interested in seeing how the discussed concepts (bone generation, cartliage properties, etc) interact with real world research and findings, this book is a good example.

Kindergarten-Grade 2-- This rhyming counting book about the sea is too dense to use as an introduction to numbers, and at times seems to get caught up in its own tongue-twisting technique. There's no game involved--such as finding a number of objects or watching the numerals bend or become something else. The point is to square the number: ``8 `octos' on the ocean floor/ Have scrambled legs, 64.'' The full-color illustrations are realistic , but they don't add much feeling of animation or movement. Nifty nimble numbers

Joy Hulme's Sea Squares is a fun rhyming romp that illustrates the concept of squaring numbers. The rhyme has a definite rythem to it and the illustrations are superb. The borders on each page hint and what the reader will find when the page is turned. The gorgeous use of color in these seascapes delights the eye. I won't buy a children's book unless the illustrations are at least as good as the text. My children love the book and didn't even realize it was a "math" book. I highly recommend adding it to your collection.

Sea Squares is Great!

I like this book because it tells you how to times, 1 x 1 = 1, 10 x 10 = 100, like that. I also like this book because it goes from 1 to 10 and shows you sea life. And sometimes on the right side margin of the page you see part of what animal comes next. When you see a white tale, you know the next page is a whale, and if you see wings, you know the next page is a seagull.

About the Author

Younes Shabany received his BS in mechanical engineering from Sharif University of Technology in Tehran, Iran, in 1991. He then went to Vancouver, Canada where he obtained his MS in mechanical engineering from the University of British Columbia in 1994. He came to the United States and received a Ph.D in mechanical engineering with a minor in aeronautics and astronautics from Stanford University, California, in 1999. Dr. Shabany has over 18 years of experience in thermal-fluid engineering. He is currently Director of Thermal Engineering & Design and Thermal Architect in Advanced Technology Group at Flextronics International USA, Milpitas, California. In this position, he has been leading thermal design activities in Flextronics’ worldwide design centers on a variety of infrastructure, computing, consumer, automobile, medical, and power electronic products. Before Flextronics, he worked for Applied Thermal Technologies, Santa Clara, California, where he was the director for two years. While at Applied Thermal Technologies, he worked with over 60 companies and designed thermal solutions for about as many pieces of electronic equipment including telecom and networking equipment, desktop and laptop computers, biomedical equipment, and consumer products. Dr. Shabany has also been a lecturer at San Jose State University, California, since the summer of 2001. He has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in heat transfer and advanced mathematical analysis including his most favorite course, Heat Transfer in Electronics. He has also advised graduate students on their projects and theses.

Good Textbook

As an electrical engineering students required to take a heat transfer class, this book did the job. I took the course with the author as the professor, and I thought that this book for the most part is concise and highlights the points which engineers need to know.

Some of the later chapters seem slightly less polished. There were also some typos, but I suppose it is not the first time I have run into typos in a textbook. Overall, this book was refreshingly to-the-point compared to some of the other engineering texts I have encountered so far. An added bonus is the form factor, it's about half the size of a regular textbook which makes it easy to bring around.

Heat Transfer - Thermal management of electonics

This book is very well written, with the necessary theory and realistic examples of many different heat transfer techniques that really helps a packaging engineer to do his job correctly. The author has a thorough understanding of heat transfer and knows how to explain this in a good way.
The only thing I miss is the answers to the exercises, in order to see if I have found the correct answeer.
A great book that I would use in undergraduate teaching if was giving such a course !!!
