Motivational with Helpful Tips - Not an Epiphany on Dating

I'll preface this by saying the few dating/relationship books I've flipped through or read descriptions for often come across as very condescending to women. This is especially true if meant to unveil the "male mind" and give it to us straight - the "ugly truth" type of stuff. They make women feel bad for being women. You come away from just one little paragraph feeling like men essentially don't like women (beyond the physical). We're told we need to be more feminine, but also think like men, less clingy, but not too independent - etc. Here is a book which focuses less on how women need to change their nature, needs, desires, etc, as if we're hopelessly incompatible with men by nature, and instead it focuses on social skills & positive thinking modes for attracting & developing relationships with compatible men we actually like & who are worth OUR time & energy.

None of this is earth-shattering, mind-blowing secrets that will give you some epiphany on love & life. Instead, it reads like common sense, the kind many of us missed the memo on, so that it's not so "common" after all.

This book doesn't insult your intelligence, berate you for being a woman, tell you that you have to compromise your values, or leave with some sick feeling that manipulation of men & dishonesty with your own feelings/needs is the "secret".

The explanations of male thinking is also not "boys will be boys" trash that insists sexist and misogynistic behaviors are simply "biological" for men & have to be tolerated by women. Instead of making excuses, the author manages to be honest & fair in describing common male mindsets & how & why certain negative attitudes/behaviors are triggered (much as stereotypical female negative behaviors can be triggered by crappy moves on a guys' part). Since a relationship is a dynamic, it's only fair to adjust what you can control - yourself. So you learn very subtle methods to hone your social & dating skill to basically COMMUNICATE in a way that men in general will grasp correctly.

This is why the book had some good advice & was worth the read - the basic idea is how to communicate who you are, how you feel, and what you expect accurately & in a way that is understood by men. So it's not about changing who you are so much as really communicating it more clearly. If you're the kind of girl whose friends & family & co-workers wonder why you're single because they think you're the bees knees, but for someone reason men you meet/briefly date aren't valuing you the same way, then this might be a helpful read. You're probably not sending the signals which communicate who YOU are correctly; you're leaving false & bad impressions. So the book is really about being MORE yourself with communication that others understand & which creates the desired effect.

A book which is founded on ideas about good communication & keeping integrity is one whose advice I feel I can trust & recommend. It has a "win-win" approach that doesn't degrade men or women - how to get what you desire/need while giving someone else what they desire/need too. Building mutually satisfying relationships is the goal, not manipulating your dream man into marrying you (blech - what an idea!).

I appreciate that this book is about subtle nuances too. Often we don't know what we do wrong because it's not anything big but a subtle signal, and we don't know why our positive signals are ignored & that's because they are TOO subtle. This advice rang true because I've noted men in general communicate more with action & are generally MORE sensitive than women, meaning they need LOUDER positive signals & SOFTER negative ones. The author refers to this as the "fragile male ego" which is really SENSITIVITY.

It also rang true that we tend to attract someone when not interested in them because we're being our authentic selves - so how do we replicate that comfortable inner state & natural outer state so we can be our best, authentic selves when interacting with someone we are attracted to? How can we communicate that quickly, when we may have a few hours, minutes, seconds even to inspire a guy to pursue us? This book gives basic tips on how to do that.

I emphasize this book is very basic. Do not expect an epiphany. A lot of it may feel like reminders of things you know, deep down, but often forget or even compromise consciously.

A downside: the book directs you to online videos for more "secrets" which are really just teasers which lead you to another video they want you to pay for. I can see this as being an endless goose chase designed to keep you hooked & shelling out money while learning very little. I'd have more respect for the author & brand if they took a less scam-like approach. The video they want you to buy has a long intro to sell it which does the classic "play on women's insecurities & promise grand secrets to solve all of their romance problems in a matter of days" approach, one which many dating gurus do. I find it borderline insulting & I naturally expect it to under-deliver with super obvious "insight" repeated ad nauseam just as the rest seem to. This approach is unfortunate & detracts from a brand that has the potential to be more positive & actually useful, as opposed to the insulting junk I described at the outset.

So don't expect too much & don't shell out a lot of money. There are basic principles here which are useful as reminders & to polish your social & dating skills, but no more than that.

I have heard Matthew Hussey speak on the radio and I was looking forward to reading his book, bu I was dissapointed to learn that after every chapter I had to sign in to the websiteand become a paid member in order to look t th video that accompanied each chapter......I felt thi was more of a pay as you go long "help book" than anyhing else.......I was extremely dissapointed and expected more from the author.......

This book's approach reminds me of that old Steve Martin comedy bit, "How you can have one MILLION dollars, and NEVER pay taxes...first, get a million dollars. Now---"

The book is described as providing dating tips that still let *you* be *you*, and don't require any gamesmanship to meet and keep a quality man; neither claim turns out to be true. In a nutshell, the book's how-to can be boiled down to this:

1. Get an amazing, irresistible life.

2. Be an amazing, irresistible person.

3. Stop being insecure.

When no one is looking he's also a drummer in a rock band, and holds black belts in seven different martial arts. His plan is to one day be independently wealthy, or even dependently wealthy--he doesn't really care whose money it is as long as they let him spend it. He has written 5 books to date and plans to write more, unless someone pays him enough to stop.

My favorite author EVER!

Now I know, you are going to say "what are you saying? What about Robert Heinelen, Isaac Asmov, Orson Scott Card, R.A, Salvator, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John? ". Yes, yes, they are all incredible, but Perry just has wit! He is so in tune with the readers, even if I'm the only one! I've been waiting for another in this series for so long. I read Dark side back when it was just a word doc online that I got for free. I emailed Perry, and yes! He answered. What a very nice guy. Seriously. So I read this book hopefully to find many of the same quirky jokes, references, etc. They were all there... Well all except for maybe a Barenaked Ladies or RUSH reference.. But anyway... The book follows our favorite hero in another adventure. James continues to learn in front of our eyes what it means to be an eternal, and we get to watch! All the characters are like family, yes very different, but so beautifully diverse. Perry has such a unique way to tell a story, I cannot imagine that his children go to bed without a story each night... Ok, they may not sleep since they are probably wearing garlic, and using sun lamps, but stories nonetheless!
Thank you Mr. Perry for another wonderful ride in darkside and in this series. Please take a break from saving Canada from bad guys, and write another!!

This author is funny as well as a great story teller, this is an easy read, meaning can just read on and on effortlessly because the books he writes are just written in a way that makes it enjoyable.

Sangeet Paul Choudary is a widely published researcher, industry keynote speaker and global CXO advisor on platform business models to high growth startups and Fortune 500 companies. He is the co-chair of the MIT Platform Strategy Summit and an industry advisor to the Global Platform Data Project at Stanford University.

He is an Entrepreneur-in-Residence at INSEAD Business School, an advisor at 500Startups, a Global Fellow at the Centre for Global Enterprise in New York and serves on the advisory board of CoFoundersLab, the world's largest community of startup founders.

Sangeet is also the author of the upcoming book Platform Revolution (W.W. Norton & Company, early 2016), as well as a contributing author to Managing Startups (O'Reilly Media, 2013). Platform Scale is a Fantastic Theoretical and Pragmatic Guide to Building the Companies of The Future

Personal Background & Summary
While Platform Scale is accessible to anyone interested in technology and how new businesses are being formed, I have always found it helpful to know the reviewers background in online reviews. In this case, I am a growth equity technology investor that is highly familiar with the concepts brought up in Platform Scale. I live and breath technology and my ability to succeed at my job depends on my understanding of technology-based businesses. With that said, this book provided incredible theoretical clarity to a number of concepts I had understood intuitively/pragmatically and has allowed me to more broadly apply these concepts across different business lines that may be in need of disruption. As a collaborator with the author on this project, I've done my best to give my objective perspective on Platform Scale, who should read it, and why it is (most assuredly) a worthwhile investment of your time.

Section 1 - Introduction to Interaction First Businesses
This section is fundamentally about bringing readers up to speed on several common concepts (Aggregation, Means of Distribution, Methods of Interaction, Role of Producers & Consumers, Network Effects, Data as Currency) that businesses operating at platform scale utilize in radically different ways than prior enterprises. Depending on your previous knowledge level and understanding of (primarily) Silicon Valley-based platform businesses (Uber, AirBnB, Facebook), you may already be aware of the mechanisms described at a superficial level, but not at the granularity of how those concepts translate into business processes. The author explores these concepts and how value is created through the idea of Pipes (linear value movement) and Platforms (bi or multi-directional value movement). The most valuable part of Section 1 lies in Chapter 5, where the key drivers of Platform Scale are described, as the author does a great job of relating previously known economic drivers with radically new opportunities based primarily on technological trends. Overall, Section 1 is a great primer as to how and why Platform Scale businesses have, almost magically and with great rapidity, become extremely competitive with previously hard-to-disrupt command and control corporations.

Section 2 - Designing the Interaction First Platform
The second section explores how to best build an interaction-first platform from the ground up, which use cases must be accounted for, where friction might be encountered, and how value will/should be created. At its core, this section describes how platforms should have a central principle of value that is easily understood, and upon which others can create additional drivers of value. While Chapter 1 gets bogged down in complex analogies in what I believe are attempts to simplify highly intricate ideas, read on as Chapter 2 describes perhaps one of the most important ideas of the entire Book, the Core Value Unit and how it powers the massive value creation of new platform businesses. The CVU and the closely connected concepts of Curation and Interaction Flows are also explored in detailed, and add necessary concrete context and examples to how one might go about designing the next Platform Scale business.

Section 3 - Building the Interaction First Platform
The third section is about one concept: execution. How does one build a PS scale business from a management perspective? Chapter 1 is a strong summary of the concepts (Interaction Space, Production Incentives, Long Term Value Creation, Curation Mechanisms, Ownable Interactions) later explored in depth. From a personal perspective, the most interesting discussion revolves around how to lock-in users in what are, by design, "open" platforms that encourage movement amongst users and producers. The corollary to this is how to utilize friction, either naturally present or artificially created, to increase the overall value of the platform. The case studies towards the end of the platform are instructive in illustrating potential avenues of dysfunction, but I question the broader applicability of the specific lessons learned here, as we in the very early stages of understanding how platforms work (this book definitively advancing our overall knowledge set).

Section 4 - Solving the Chicken or the Egg Problem
The fourth section explores the old-as-time problem of creating a two-sided interaction from scratch in the context of the very new platform scale business. Instead of suggesting concrete ways of juicing the marketplace, which I would have discounted as likely too specific to be broadly applicable, the author instead takes the stronger path of prioritizing theoretical approaches to sparking interaction. Of the concepts presented, the most salient is likely the staged value creation approach, which the author presents concisely in a case study of OpenTable.

Section 5 - Virality - Scale in a Networked World
Once you have solved for Section 4, i.e. the positive feedback loop is self-sustaining, how do you increase the rate at which it interacts? Section 5 describes two main strategies, several temporary (Termed "Bumps") and several that are more sustainable (Termed "Engines"). The author's deconstruction in Chapter 4 of virality in comparison to contagious diseases is both humorous and incredibly informative. For those that are familiar with the Lean Startup movement and its startup canvas, the author's Viral Canvas's and corresponding examples were extremely helpful in clarifying the concepts presented.

Section 6 - Reverse Network Effect
In The Who's song, Won't Get Fooled Again, there is a line, "Meet the new boss, Same as the old boss." As the author sums up, I can't help but agree that while the creation of big command and control corporations may be ending, the creation of enormous platform-scale ecosystems is just beginning. Given that is the case, and that many platforms are currently subsidizing their value creation for both users and producers, the author's focus on how to scale value without significant amounts of capital is apropos. Finally, Platform Scale ends with a discussion of some of the problems associated with platform scale business and how to best approach them, which will surely make this required reading amongst management at platform scale businesses when funding for subsidized value creation becomes scarce.

Summary
Overall, Platform Scale is a fantastic exploration of the steps required to build platform scale businesses and ensure they are self-sustaining. More importantly, this book also prepares the reader for the platform scale businesses of the future by discussing the theoretical and abstract components of PS ecosystems. Despite some unnecessarily complex examples in specific sections, the author manages to maintain consistent tone and quality throughout what is an ambitious look at where business is likely headed. While PS is most applicable to business managers, investors, and those interested in technology, I also believe the book is illuminating to those that seek to understand how the world works in general, as the principles discussed herein will power a significant portion of the business world, and society, going forward.

Rich with patterns and models derived from hundreds of examples of consumer platforms

Platform Scale stands out among other works on Platforms so far. Sangeet Choudary has proved that the unique style of presenting complex and tough material as simple, clear concepts can only happen when the author lives and breathes the stuff. The principles of design of platforms and modern businesses come to life with the examples he covers throughout the book. These businesses are consumer businesses that are changing the daily routines of people around the world. Yet, there are not many articles or books that cover them with the comprehensive thought process on how they might be built. Sangeet's book fills the gaps in existing literature and also challenges established works to bring more contemporary and futuristic businesses as examples to the table for discussion. It is tempting to ask Sangeet to satisfy the Software engineers who provide the backbone to most of the digital platforms in his future work. But his mission is clear when he says that he chose to write the book for startups and entrepreneurs dreaming to build platforms of the future. The book does justice not only to his target audience but also to any student of business who is curious to grasp the emerging trends in consumer platforms. I strongly recommend this work as a must read for anyone to get to the core of changes happening in businesses and industries around them, throughout the world.

Many recipes simply do not work.

I am professional in pastry in a popular modern restaurant. I bought this book to give me new ideas for our weekly prix fix menu. It's really hard to find books with modern plated desserts, so I was very excited and this is a very well known Chef. First of all, after looking through the book once, you notice almost all the desserts are very similar but each page is a variation of flavor in the same dessert. Also, take note that the main reason a lot of these items look so beautiful are because of the colorful micro flowers. It's not practical from a flavor stand point. I try to avoid that because, quite frankly, flowers don't taste very good. And last, but most important of all, THE RECIPES DON'T WORK. I bought this book a couple weeks ago and it came with a little slip of paper with corrections to some of the recipes, so I assumed everything was correct. Well I have tried a chocolate glaze, fruit glass, and his famous crema catalana recipe. Glaze was sticky and hard to manage, glass was clear with no color like the picture, and the crema catalana curdles any way you try. Mind you, I tried the crema catalana recipe 3 times, assuming I was at fault. I'm a professional and rarely have problems producing from recipes. They're just weird and never give you the product you expected from the pictures. Luckily I ordered Payard Desserts at the same time and the recipes are wonderful! Sorry Bachour, I gave you a try.

The great and not so great.

This is a fantastic book! I love chef's style and techniques and have defiantly spawned some ideas from just looking at the formulas and flavor combinations he does. HOWEVER, beware... There are ALOT of errors in this book. Formulas for chocolate glaze, without a quantity for chocolate; strawberry jelly using pineapple juice?! And numerous spelling errors, etc. Come on guys.. Let's make a Bachour 2.0 version with a better approach.

Stunning Photos BUT save your money

Antonio Bachour has wonderful imagination and exceptional skill with his magical deserts and pastries, Alan Batman's photographs do them true homage, however Katie Rosenhouse as an editor leaves everything to be desired.
The book arrives with a hastily (laser) printed A4 sheet of errors, which you might put up with and shrug and accept it, however the sheet only corrects a few of the errors and omissions in this otherwise stunning book.

Frankly it's disappointing that you can't rely upon what's in the book as far as directions and ingredients go, Batt needs to get his head away from the view-finder and read the text after his Ed has ticked off on the content, if you are going to be a Publisher, particularly of books that require technical skill and accuracy with ingredients then you need to do more than just say it's "pretty".

Michael Hattaway was educated in New Zealand and at Cambridge. He has taught at the Universities of Kent, British Columbia, Massachusetts, and Sheffield. He is the author of Elizabethan Popular Theatre (1982) and Hamlet: The Critics Debate (1987) and is the editor of A Companion to English Renaissance Literature and Culture (2000); with A. R. Braunmuller, of The Cambridge Companion to English Renaissance Drama (1990), and, with Derek Roper and Boika Sokolova, of Shakespeare in the New Europe (1994). For the New Mermaids he has edited Beaumont's The Knight of the Burning Pestle, for the New Cambridge Shakespeare 1-3 Henry VI and As You Like It, and for the Revels Series Jonson's The New Inn.

Part 3, And Still Running Strong

If you read Part 2, you know that York and his sons Edward and Richard (in quest for the crown) won a battle against King Henry VI, Queen Margaret, and their allies. These defeated parties fled. But one won battle does not mean the war. If York is to be king, he needs some degree of public approval. (King Henry IV in Shakespeare AND history suffered many uprisings due to a flawed claim to the crown!)

In 1.1, York and Henry VI have a verbal conflict. York shows some degree of conscience in that he will let Henry VI reign for life, if Henry declares York or his surviving sons the heir to the crown. (But this peace is short lived. It is not good enough for the queen or her son.)

In her 4 appearances, this is Queen Margaret's strongest one. She takes control of the king's forces, and along with Clifford and others defeats York most brutally. (You may recall Clifford's father was killed in Part 2, and Clifford vowed revenge.) York's sons (despite their father's death) and their ally Warwick continue to fight. In this play Shakespeare shows us the true horrors of war with 'the son that hath killed the father' and 'the father that hath killed his son.' Some realities take the glory out of war.

Edward, Richard, and Warwick are triumphant. Soon afterwards, poor Henry Vi is captured. Despite Edward's role as the villain, Shakespeare gives him some decent treatment. (He was after all Elizabeth's great grandfather.) Richard receives no such treatment. Rather, Shakespeare prepares Richard's brewing evil for the next play ("Richard III").

Moving on, Warwick encourages Edward IV to marry Lady Bona of France and thus secure relations with France. (After all, it would be dangerous i Margaret and the exiled Lancastrians make an ally of France.) Well, Edward falls in love with Elizabeth Woodville, and marries her. To make along story short, Warwick learns about this, and in a fury, forms an alliance with Margaret and vows to take Edward down and restore Henry VI. There were actually several reasons in history why Warwick switched sides, but Shakespeare only has so much he can put in one play.

Moving on, the Lancastrians with the help of France strike back, and Edward IV is defeated. Henry VI is then restored to the throne. We also see the eventual King Henry VII who will put an end to the war. (But not until the next play.)

Sadly, this moment of happiness is short lived, and one by one the tragic heroes of this play are killed. Queen Margaret fought especially well, but she too is defeated. Richard himself murders Henry VI and proudly compares himself to Judas Iscariot. (Talk about Shakespeare terror!) Oxford is captured, but (as in history) he will escape eventually and join Henry VII. The bad guys win in this play, but we can also see that division is brewing. (That will come full force in the next play "Richard III.")
