A very useful resource for teachers of English as a second or foreign language.
By John Martin
Teaching English as a Second or Foreign Language is edited by Marianne Celce-Murcia, Donna M. Grinton, David Bohlke and Marguerite Ann Snow. It is the fourth edition of the book and a comprehensive guide to this subject. The book is divided into six units with the following titles:
1. Foundations of Methodology
2. Language Skills
3. Skills for teachers
4. Integrated approaches
5. Focus on the learner
6. Focus on the teacher

Each unit contains a number of articles by various authors. In all, the book provides a valuable reference volume to any teacher who wants to understand how to teach English better to those for whom English is not their native language. As a teacher of this subject myself, I find it particularly helpful in many ways.

It's great to have the up-dated version of this textbook
By Sassy Senior
It's great to have the up-dated version of this textbook. Being an educator with an M.A. in ELL, I need to keep up with all of the most current theories and teaching strategies. I have used Celce-Murcia's text throughout my Master's program and consider it an absolute must have.
The textbook arrived as promised and the condition presented. I would use this vender again if the need arose.

I love this book
By TA
I love this book. It's a nice read with great ideas about teaching ESL/EFL. I think it's a beneficial book for those who already have some relatable teaching experience; however, anyone could get some great tools and tips. The book is pricey. I purchased it for a course, otherwise I might not have gotten it on my own for how much it costs. Nonetheless, I did enjoy reading it.

Marie Curie: A Biography, by Marilyn Bailey Ogilvie

There is probably no woman scientist more famous than Marie Curie (1867-1934). She made one of the most important theoretical breakthroughs of the twentieth century when she postulated that radiation was an atomic rather than a chemical property, an important milestone in understanding the structure of matter. Not only did she coin the term radioactivity, but her painstaking research culminated in the isolation of two new elements, polonium and radium. For her achievements she won two Nobel Prizes, one in physics (in 1903) and the other in chemistry (in 1911).

This informative, accessible, and concise biography looks at Marie Curie not just as a dedicated scientist but also as a complex woman with a sometimes-tumultuous personal life. This historian of science describes Curie’s life and career, from her early years in Poland, where she was born Maria Sklodowska; through her marriage to and collaboration with Pierre Curie; her appointment as the first female professor at Sorbonne University after his untimely death; and the scientific work that led to her recognition by the Nobel Prize committee. The author also candidly discusses the controversy that surrounded Marie when detractors charged that her work was actually performed by her late husband.

Finally, she describes Curie’s work in founding the radium institutes to study radiation and in establishing mobile X-ray units during World War I. Eventually, her long exposure to radium led to her death from aplastic anemia in 1934. A year later, Albert Einstein published a tribute to her in memoriam, praising both her intuition and her tenacity under the most trying circumstances.

Ogilvie’s appealing narrative brings the brilliant scientist and courageous woman to life in a story that will continue to inspire future scientists.

From Publishers Weekly
This concise look at the life of one of the most famous female scientist gives readers insight into her struggle with the demands of family and the social responsibility associated with her groundbreaking work in physics and chemistry. The youngest daughter of educated Polish parents, during an era when Russian control clamped down on the slightest hint of Polish nationalism, Marie learned early that you had to fight, often secretly, for what you believed in. With a childhood marred by the deaths of her mother and sister, these early lessons made this "stubborn" woman determined to get an education at a time when women were not encouraged to attend university—let alone to study science. Ogilvie reveals a deeper story behind Marie's romantic and professional relationship with Pierre Curie, a kindred soul who, like Marie, believed that "salvation lay in science and religion." A shy, private woman, she couldn't understand the publicity over her later later with physicist Paul Langevin, years after Pierre died in a traffic accident. Even as her health faded, a terrible side effect of handling radioactive materials for years, she continued to work hard. Ogilvie's biography offers brisk insight in this fascinating woman whose life and work became the model for the modern female scientist. (Dec.)

Review
"[P]rovides a fast-paced and well-documented portrait of Marie Curie and the world surrounding her....[t]his book creates a delicate balance between her personal and professional life. The author is careful in her conclusions from available records. This book is a wonderful addition to those narratives about an accomplished scientist." -- The American Biology Teacher

"The book tells the story of Marie Curie's life. Her struggles against poverty and prejudice are emphasized, and throughout the book the author makes many links that may be familiar to modern teenagers. The importance of Marie Curie's pioneering work in radioactivity is described and, while the author is careful to describe and credit Pierre Curie's contributions, she explores the difficulties that Marie Curie had in gaining recognition as a scientist from the establishment....[t]he meticulous bibliographies at the end of each chapter are a model of good practice for students." --School Science Review

"[A] top pick for high school to college-level collections." --MBR Internet Bookwatch

I would recommend this book highly, especially for a non scientist. It is very readable . My whole family read it and it gave us all a better understanding of radioactivity.I especially liked knowing that she also had a family life, and an amazing husband.

A must-read for all women!
By Monique Gray
I'm a biology major and chemistry is not my best subject. I know that they go together, but I have a tough time with it. I read this book to go along with an assignment from my chemistry class last semester. As a woman, I really respect and admire what Curie went through to get where she's at. I think of this book daily. It was an interesting read, and it really brought my interest level with chemistry way up. Suddenly I want to know more about nuclear chemistry. And, if you knew me, you would know that this is a very new development. Anyhow, I love this book! I think it's a good and easy read. It gives a good background of nuclear chemistry. And, finally, it is a great biography of Curie-- it really details her struggles to become who she was as well as her determination to become who she became.

After watching the movie Madame Curie on TCM I wanted to learn more about her, Pierre and her children. Fascinating book about a brilliant and complicated woman. Author did an excellent job of research and made Marie come alive for me. Not just the facts, but real insight into her personality and relationships with others.

Best-selling author Laurence Anholt turns Mary's fascinating life into a beautiful story, ideal for reading aloud. Sheila Moxley's luscious pictures vividly evoke the coastal setting and the real-life dramas of this spectacular tale.

From Publishers Weekly
Anholt's cumbersome and text-laden story centers on the early years of Mary Anning, born in 1799 and known in her native England for her discovery of ancient fossils. From the moment that her beloved father, nicknamed "Pepper" for his "speckled beard," extracts a "snakestone" (a fossil of a snake) from the clay cliffs near their seaside home, Mary spends her days searching alone for similar "curiosities," while peers taunt her with the titular nickname. Soon after her father dies, Mary discovers a dog (with a coat like "speckled pepper") near his grave. Encouraged by the Philpot sisters, local scientists, the mournful girl continues to collect fossils and searches for the giant sea monster's bones, which, legend has it, lay hidden in the cliffs. Her devoted pet leads his young mistress to the skeleton of this ichthyosaur, then vanishes. As with the death of Mary's father, the text glosses over the dog's disappearance, but readers will likely see it as a shadow cast over the discovery and marking another significant loss in young Mary's life. Moxley's (Skip Across the Ocean) vividly hued, primitivist artwork features some creatively skewed perspectives as well as several potentially disturbing images: a farmhouse teeters on the edge of eroding cliffs, while nearby are half-submerged cows and a person apparently gesturing in distress. Anholt convincingly lays the groundwork for Anning to go on to become a noted scientist and local hero, but youngsters will likely find this account of her childhood sad rather than celebratory. Ages 5-9.

From School Library Journal
Grade 1-4-Mary Anning, born in England in 1799, made an astounding discovery at the age of 12 when she unearthed the first full skeleton of an ichthyosaur in the cliffs above her home in Lyme Regis. Anholt begins his picture-book biography with a dramatic episode in which baby Mary is said to have been struck by lightning. The well-shaped, fictionalized account creates a cozy view of her relationship with her father, who taught her to recognize the many forms of fossils in the crumbly Dorset cliffs before his death when she was perhaps 10 or 11. A mysterious, small dog Mary finds in the cemetery becomes the agent in finding the enormous fossil. Two wealthy women, allegedly scientists, tutor Mary as she develops a small business selling fossils as curiosities to tourists. Pleasing folk-art views spread across the pages in luscious blues and greens, magenta, and pumpkin, following the plucky child's odyssey that led to her lifelong contribution to paleontology. Children will be attracted by the jacket view of dinosaurs climbing the path through the cliffs below Mary. Picture bands bordering one side or the other of most pages handsomely unify each spread. The substantial text reads aloud well. The author provides a short closing note on Anning's place in science and also claims that she is the inspiration of the traditional rhyme "she sells seashells by the seashore." Review
An enjoyable story. The somewhat cartoon-like illustrations - making beautiful use of rich colours that saturate the page - may appeal to slightly younger readers.

Age appropriate, well written, nicely illustrated.
By MidwesternUS
I bought this for my four year old daughter and she loves it. The writing is clear and age appropriate. The illustrations are well-rendered, imaginative and appealing. The book itself is well made - I got a used former library edition, and it was in excellent shape. I will be looking for other works by this author. There is also a nice postscript covering some additional detail of Mary Anning's life inside the back cover that provides some 'grownup' context for further reference. Overall, excellent book.

Follow your dream
By John R Flinn
I especially liked this book because it gives young children (especially girls) encouragement to follow their passion in learning about the natural world. This is my grandaughters favorite book and she has shared it with many of her friends. Like many 6 year olds she loves to learn about dinosaurs and this book and its wonderful illustrations was a winner.

Stone girl, bone girl
By sally toll
Excellent resource for our dinosaur project. The life story of Mary Anning, one of Britains most famous paleantologists. Very child friendly as she was a child when she found the ichthyosaurus.
