Technology Educaiton College, Scott Higgin -- One reviewer commented book tends to discuss more of "the drug classes rather than the individual drugs. This is a good approach as individual drugs continue to climb in numbers, the expanding number of potential side effects are confusing. Relying on the drug classes rather than specific drugs will give the technician an idea of possible side effects and interactions without trying to learn the myriad of drugs all at once."

Really, Only Two and One-Half Stars

The information provided in this volume is appropriate to its stated purpose, namely preparing students for licensure and/or certification as pharmacy technicians. It is factual and generally well presented. However, like other volumes in this series, certain editing and styling deficits detract from its usefulness. Most glaring of these is the discrepancy between listings in its Index and the actual pages upon which certain information may be found. Others include spelling and syntactical errors that make the meaning of certain passages unclear. A bit more attention to detail in editing would yield a much improved volume.
I gave this book a half-star more than others in this series because its content is a bit better presented. However, it still suffers from the above-listed shortcomings. The placement of tables in the book and their location according to the Index are especially discrepant.

Inaccurate information

I stumbled on a number of spelling/ grammer errors in the book, but the most critical error so far has been a drug listed on page 149 - Pemoline. This book was published in 2008, but the drug pemoline was withdrawn by the FDA (see below) some three years earlier. Since this is used for a pharmacy tech textbook, you'd think the drug facts would be checked closely. This one fact that I just happened to see makes me doubt the other information contained in the book.
FDA ALERT [10/2005]: Liver Injury Risk and Market Withdrawal
The Agency has concluded that the overall risk of liver toxicity from Cylert and generic pemoline products outweighs the benefits of this drug. In May 2005, Abbott chose to stop sales and marketing of Cylert in the U.S. All generic companies have also agreed to stop sales and marketing of this product (Pemoline tablets and chewable tablets).
