Siera Maley was born and raised in the southern Bible Belt, where there wasn't much room for open-mindedness or diversity. After coming out as a lesbian as a teen, she relocated to a more suburban area and is now working on a four-year degree while living with her girlfriend and very adorable dog.

Happy endings...so satisfying

I thought Maley's first book was fantastic so when I saw she'd released something new I jumped on it. In a happy coincidence the book seems to be inspired by a certain MTV show I (and no doubt many of us) was recently left feeling dissatisfied over. Maley does it right, and I so wish the show in question had headed in the same direction on pretty much all counts.
But this is not just an "inspired by" book, it stands alone with really well developed main and tertiary characters and the story it tells is ultimately quite different. The dialogue was sensational. Katie is caustic but adorable and Sarah is adorable too in her own slightly damaged and vulnerable way. I genuinely felt the emotion and conflict between the two, which is something I don't say lightly. It's so hard to get that right. There was a good use of humor and some nice meta references throughout too.
If I had criticism of this book it's that it's maybe a bit too short. I went into it knowing it was a shortish book and I actually rationed myself so I didn't read it all at once, it's that good!
I really hope we see more from this author, she's right up the top of the list for me at the moment.

Fantastic Read!

I really wasn't expecting all that much. Just looking for another lesbian romance to start during my lunch hour. Wow. This was just a fantastic read. I'm a total sucker for lesbian young adult and this just punched every button.
I also really appreciated the not particularly subtle jibes at the current state of YA GLBT lit that seems to always end on some kind of ambiguous or negative resolution.

A Book for YA whether you're Gay, Bi, or Straight

After seeing MTV's Faking It (not to compare it, but I'm sure anyone who has seen the show will see the definite similarities between this book and the show) I was in love with both the characters and the entire concept that was original yet age old. What happens if you pretend to be something you're not, and fall for your best friend in the concept. It's not just about LGBT, or finding your sexuality, it's about finding your own identity at a time when it's most difficult. But still, I was left feeling a little dissatisfied with the progression and the muddled love triangle it's attempting to create. Maybe once it begins again in the next month, it will clear some things up. But this book made me laugh, cry, and wish it had been around when I was a teenager. A definite must read.
